It's one thing to hear about all of the great green things you can do in your home.... It's quite another to see them in action and have the confidence to do them yourself. That's why CarbonfreeDC is hosting a tour of "Climate Pilot" participants Nolan and Karen Stokes' home in Fairfox, VA, on Sunday, March 7.
In July 2009, Nolan Stokes, a Certified Financial Planner, and his wife Kathy Stokes, committed to greening their daily routines for an eight month period in an attempt to find new ways to help cut global warming pollution as a green family unit. Nolan and Kathy were selected as one of four Northern Virginia families in the unique ‘climate pilot’ program, a cooperation between the Swedish embassy here in D.C. and the City of Kalmar, Sweden, aimed at challenging these households to be aware of their climate impact in different areas. The Stokes took their task to heart by tackling many of the smaller (and very affordable) ways to reduce their energy and consumption. But they also set their sights higher by making major weatherization upgrades (new windows, new garage doors, lots of insulation) and even installing a geothermal heat pump to tap the Earth's constant temperature in order to warm and cool their home more efficiently (see an article on the installation) Their experience and home offers plenty to learn from!
During the tour of their home, the Stokes will share what they learned and demonstrate how they incorporated green changes into their lifestyles. If you ever wanted to green your home but wasn't sure where to begin (or how to pay for it!), this is your chance.
Tour size limited to no more than 15 participants. We will meet at East Falls Metro stop at the "D" bus stop. A shuttle of minivans will pick us up promptly at 12:45pm, so be sure to be there 10-15 minutes early! The tour will run for about 2 hours and transportation back to the Metro stop will be provided. If you plan to drive to the Metro Stop, please answer the extra question when you RSVP and we'll send you the street address of the Stoke family.
