Come out and show your support for expanding access to renewable energy in the District!
DC Solar United Neighborhoods and the Washington, DC Chapter of the Sierra Club are spearheading this legislative campaign to bring community solar to the district. The DC Council Committee on Public Services and Consumer Affairs will hold a hearing on June 14 at 1:00p to hear testimony from the community on why community-based (also called community-shared) renewable energy is important.
By way of background, currently, residential home/building owners comprise the only group benefiting from solar energy. This bill would enable participation in renewable energy generation by renters, occupants of multi-unit buildings, low-income residents and owners of homes that may be in shaded areas or have insufficient roof orientation. For those who are interested in reducing or discontinuing use of fossil fuel-based energy and reducing their energy costs, this bill will make solar energy substantially more accessible and affordable, through virtual net metering. Also, community-based renewable energy generation will create more green jobs for DC residents.
