Making Black Friday Green: How We Can Promote Sustainable Business Practices

With Black Friday and the holiday season just around the corner, we often face a choice of participating in the hyper-consumer culture or simply abstaining. This panel will explore another option, which we can use all year: using your power as a consumer to encourage businesses to adopt more sustainable business practices.

Attendees of the panel will learn both how to find businesses that are already using environmentally sustainable practices so they can support them and how to encourage their local businesses to go green, whether individually or through a group. The panel, moderated by Kurt Walters from CarbonfreeDC, will include an all-star cast of speakers:

Stephanie Sheridan, founder of IPAI Global and Dupont Green Week
Steve Ma, president of Live Green
Megan Barrett, communications manager of Clean Currents
Andy Shallal, owner of Busboys and Poets

The panel is being held at the beautiful library in Shaw, directly across the street from the Shaw/Howard Metro stop. Hope to see you there!

Are you suggesting that this be something that is addressed on the panel, or that we should have more information on it in this Meetup listing?

Green business is more the focus of the panel than Black Friday itself, it just so happens that the event is on the Monday before one of the biggest shopping days of the year, so people's minds will be on shopping and commerce more than usual. The idea is that the same techniques that would encourage businesses to go green all year long will also make Black Friday more sustainable.

Here's an article with some background on some of the environmental impact of Black Friday: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1109/29934.html. There's also a more general description here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_%28shopping%29.

Why not EXPLAIN concisely what "Black Friday" IS and why this is a concern?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
