For newbies and oldies: Christmas Meal

Hear 'ye...hear 'ye. Christmas is a-commen so time for some drinkies! Rita has asked me to update this meetup, so here goes...

Bad, naughty Prince of Wales pub booked us, then un-booked us for dinner this Saturday as you may have read in the comments. As such we have decided to meet there anyway!

New plan: we all get together a bit earlier, for drinks, light banter and general Christmassy celebrations. You can turn up whenever you like (7pm will still be fine for those that have other plans - just call me - Stuart).

If a big table becomes available, we shall just nab it and move in for dinner. If not we shall wander around the corner to one of many other eating establishments to continue the Christmas cheer with some food.

So come one, come all, newbies and oldies! Everyone is welcome to come, whether they've been to a meetup social before or not. It has been a great year that has seen our vibrant little social group grow from nothing in less than 12 months! And all because of you, our members. That's worth a drink!

Sorry to ask as I know a lot of work is going in to organise this, but do we have somewhere to go now? Is the plan we meet in the evening still and try our luck?

    1 · December 12, 2012

    • Stuart R.

Hi Matthew. Sorry for the delay. I have just updated the meetup on behalf of Rita. Yes - we are still meeting up, but earlier now to extend the cheer :)

I could not find anything suitable in the Bay.
However there was a suggestion being made on Saturday that we might just meet at the Prince of Wales anyway, and take it from there.
We might still be able to sit down and have a meal in there. As they are taking no bookings, it cannot be booked out by definition! :)

    December 10, 2012

  • Juliet H.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Christmas meal...I can ask at the Juno Lounge about Saturday if you want?

    Hey Guys,
Do you want me to do a round in the Bay restaurants and ask those ones which are not so expensive if they will take our group in?
But I like Stuart's idea, also. The Juno is probably a good place for a cool dinner. they could put us upstairs in a big table.

    1 · December 5, 2012

    • Stuart R.

Sounds like a good idea - cant hurt to see what other options we have!

      December 6, 2012

  • Rita

    Hi Guys,

I have a problem. When I phoned Prince of Wales on the weekend they explained that they couldn't have us for the Christmas meal. Apparently they have told many groups that at the same time so they've obviously done a double booking somewhere. I have been ringing around so many places but not luck yet. I will keep trying but if anyone has any suggestions then please do let me know.

    Sorry about this guys.

How about one of the pub quiz pubs...pear tree, juno lounge, the cayo, etc? And was it revolution de cuba that had lots of dinner tables? Still learning the scene Im afraid.

      December 4, 2012

    • Kirsty

Is the 15th a rugby day? If it is we might have more luck with places slightly outside of the town centre?

      December 5, 2012

  • Juliet H.

Yeah I think Stuart's suggestions are good..any luck Rita?

      December 4, 2012

Ah, I've found out the reason. The person that I spoke to previously said that there was availability but didn't realise that they didn't book for friday nights. Great!!!!

    Hi Guys,
    I am a bit confused...
Is it Wednesday (12th?) or Friday 15th?

    December 2, 2012

    • Owen

      Friday 15th

      December 2, 2012

    • Rowan

      Saturday 15th lol

      1 · December 2, 2012

  • Rita

Hey guys. It looks like there's a majority vote for the Wednesday so I''ll look into it for then. It requires a 3 pound deposit which some of you have already paid me but if you are unable to make it, please let the RSVP reflect this as I'll need to pay this. IT'S CHRISTMAS GUYS!

    1 · November 28, 2012

    • Mercy

How do we pay you the deposit?

      December 2, 2012

    • Keith E.

I can make Sat 15th. How do you want your money?

      December 2, 2012

  • Kal

If anyone here has any dietary requirements then just call the Wetherspoons helpdesk and they'll tell you what you can have on the Christmas menu or any alternatives :)

    November 29, 2012

  • Rita

Ok.I've spoken to prince of Wales: availability 14th and 15th at 7pm. No availability on the 30th or 1st I'm afraid. Who's up for Friday 14th?

    1 · November 22, 2012

    • Rowan

Can't do 14th as have work Xmas party. But if you decide on 15th, I will come along :-)

      November 22, 2012

    • Owen

      I can do either. :)

      November 25, 2012

  • Stuart R.

If only Friday was a 13th instead of a 14th...we could all come as rabid reindeer, sadistic santas, or evil elves...oh well!

    3 · November 22, 2012

  • Jon G

My works christmas meal is on 14th so 15th is preferable/better.
I don't want to be greedy and have two meals in 1 day!

    1 · November 22, 2012

  • Naquita

Everyone seems to be able to do the 15th other than me, so I think you guys should just all arrange it for then. I'll be sad to miss it but it's probably easier as the 30th isn't that far away and it's far simpler to do one Christmas meal.

    November 18, 2012

  • Owen

Also whenisgood.net does the same thing. :)

    November 17, 2012

  • Naquita

Would Friday 30th November work for people?

If not, then although I suggested this meetup and obviously want to go, it looks like Saturday 15th December may be the best date for everyone else

    1 · November 15, 2012

    • Rowan

I can't do Fridays. How about having 2 meals? One on 30th Nov and the other on 15th Dec? Then people can choose or even come to both.

      2 · November 16, 2012

    • Dan

HI Niquita/Everyone! have you heard of doodle.com? Its a site that helps you arrange events. Its free and very good when there are lots of people to arrange. You can suggest a range of dates and people can indicate which dates they are/are not free. You can then easily see which dates are most popular. You can put the link on this site so that people just need to click the link then diverted to the site. Its works well i think. Woudl be good to use to arrange this meetup.

      November 17, 2012

  • Owen

We could always do another meal, for those who can't make it, best of both worlds :-)

    November 15, 2012

  • Rowan

Should we select three dates and ask people to vote? The most popular wins?

Or Rita, just pick a date. As you are organising it, you should choose the date best for you.

    2 · November 14, 2012

  • Rita

I'm not able tp make the 22nd because I'm at a wedding. Would you all prefer to try a Friday?

    November 12, 2012

    • Naquita

Friday's are good for me too. I've got my work Xmas do on the 7th but other than that I'm free

      November 12, 2012

    • Rowan

I can't do Fridays :( I think it's gonna be impossible to find a good date for everyone. Shame.

      November 12, 2012

  • Owen

Friday is also ok for me.

    November 12, 2012

  • Rowan

The Prince of Wales would be a good location for me, as very handy for train station :-) Or if not, anywhere else central would be fine. Thanks for organising Rita.

    hi Guys,

The Wetherspoons Christmas meal can be seen at
http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/static/pdfs/christmas-2012/xmas-875.pdf Christmas meal and a drink £8.75 - pretty cheap eh?

I am going to try for Saturday 15th December if everyone is happy for that. It will be £3 deposit each. I will set up a paypal payment for the deposit.
If anyone has objections let me know.

Sounds good. Got the 15th & 22nd Dec free at the moment so either of those dates are good for me

      November 11, 2012

  • Rowan

Or I may be-able to do Sat 15th Dec as well.

    1 · November 9, 2012

  • Rowan

    How about Sat 22nd December?

    November 9, 2012

  • Jon G

Hi Naquita, There are a few dates which I'm *not* free / unavailable, and these are: first Saturday in December (1st),
first three Tuesdays in December (4th, 11th and 18th), and
Friday December 14th. Any other dates are fine.

    November 9, 2012

  • Naquita

Has anyone got a prefernce for dates so we can start organising the specifics of this, including taking deposits and booking a table? As Rita points out it's hard to do at last minute.

    November 8, 2012

  • Rita

The thing is availability and how much everyone is prepared to pay. It's quite a surprise how much everything costs. When I get a chance I will enquire. Also we will only be able to book once we set down the deposit.
I'm not sure how possible a Friday or Saturday night will be for a large group at late notice

How about somewhere a little more upmarket than prince of wales? O'Neills is only across the road. I can't guarantee my presence, but how about a Sunday?

    November 6, 2012

  • Stuart R.

Actually this would be a good one for members who haven't had the chance to join in yet. I will bring a red Welsh stuffed toy dragon and sit him on the table. Easy way to recognise us that way :)
