Come and try Caving!

  • November 9, 2013 · 9:30 AM

Ever been tempted to stick a light on your head, and head off into a deep, dark hole in the ground...just 'cause it looked fun? Well your chance to try it has arrived! The South Wales Caving Club (SWCC) is holding a 'come and try' day, open to all to try out the underground sport of caving.

It may be classified as an extreme sport, but it is only really as extreme as you want to make it. So no need to worry about being pushed down a deep, dark hole with no possibility of escape! What we will do is take the group into the easily accessible part of Ogof Ffynnon Ddu, for a couple of hours, to have a wander around through a variety of passages. As people get used to it, we will offer some of the tighter passages to the more adventuress. You only ever have to do what you are comfortable with - no problems!

If you have a good helmet and a decent headlamp you are welcome to use that. A pair of cotton overalls would be fine for this introductory weekend, or you can hire the full water proof version with all the kit if you prefer. You must however bring comfortable, loose fitting clothes (NOT jeans!) and a pair of wellingtons or hiking boots (that you don't mind getting wet and dirty). No need to rug up as you get quite warm moving along, but bring a fleece jumper.

SWCC own the caving hut, situated right on top of the cave. Hence, there are showers, change rooms, kitchen, etc to make life comfortable. We can either head over for the one day, or stay overnight as there is also in excess of 5 bunk rooms available.

The small £10 charge provides you provisional membership of the caving club for 1 year. This is needed for insurance reasons. The other optional costs are...

£15 for caving overalls, helmet and light

£5 for an over night stay at the club house if you wish to stay for caving on both Saturday and Sunday (I will be there!)

£4 if you would like to join us for a prepared club dinner (usually a curry), or you are very welcome to bring your own.

So, don't hesitate...give it a go! The group leaders (and me!) are experienced cavers, and we are there to make the whole experience a wonderful, fun time for all. So come along!

Hi All. I just need to confirm final details now (as best I can work out from the comments) so please let me know if I have the following correct...

    Kate: Coming Saturday, back Sunday
    Matt: Coming Saturday, back Sunday
    Ned: Coming Saturday, back Sunday
    Owen: Coming Saturday, back Saturday
    Sian: Coming Friday, back Saturday

Hi Stuart, I think I will also be coming up Saturday and back Saturday - sorry to have been so indecisive!

    • Stuart R.

No worries Kate. See you then!

And just to let everyone know that I have caving kit booked for you all - £10 per day. You can meet me at the caving club at 8:50am or at Absolute Adventure at SA9 1GB (the entrance road pretty much to the caving club) at 9:00am and we will get you all fitted out.

If you have a decent LED torch or headlamp, bring it with you as you can never have too much light, and the hire ones are basic only. And as mentioned before, track pants or thermal bottoms, fleece or thermal top with T shirt and I always bring caving chocolate in a pocket (yummo)! I'll bring some blank forms for you all to fill out as I only received a couple of usable ones :)

    Woo hoo...bring it on!

I'm no longer going to be able to make this. Or at least I don't think it's a good idea. I've managed to damage my knee (some more) and I have been advised to rest rather than go running, walking... I'm gutted. :-(

    November 4, 2013

    • Stuart R.

That's a shame. Hope your knee gets back to normal soon.

Hiya folks ... I am hoping to snag a ride up from Cardiff on the Saturday morning ... Can someone please email me if you have room in your car and when and where to meet you! Many thanks! ;o

I can pick you up. I'll work and some times and details later this evening.

I'm going to travel up on the Friday night and stay over. Be great if some others were up for this too. Then I'll be driving back after the day's caving. More than happy to drive others if you so wish. I'll be coming from Porthcawl but can go via Cardiff if needs be. Let me know your plans.

    November 3, 2013

  • Sian

Hey, I just wondered what most people were doing next weekend? I'm thinking of driving up on the Friday night and staying over - less rush and hassle in the morning and it might be nice to have a bit of a social evening - maybe cook (or get takeaway) and play a few games etc.

Also, is anyone staying the Saturday night or staying for the fireworks/meal? To be honest, staying over on the Fri and coming back on the Saturday would be best for me - as I have work on Sunday.

Stuart, I know this is probably impossible to answer - but do you have an idea of what time the meal etc will be happening/finishing?

Some responses would be great guys. Also, I'm driving from Porthcawl and am happy to take people if you plan on staying the same time I do etc...

    Looking forward to it :)

    November 3, 2013

    • Stuart R.

      Hi there

Best I know is at this stage is that there hadn't been enough interest in the meal so it likely wont happen so I'll probably eat at the pub down the road then come back for the fireworks. I would guess the festivities will start after dark so maybe 7ish and go for an hour say.

And I would recommend coming up on the Friday night if you aren't a morning person as we have to try on and get caving kit down the road before 9am so gets quite early if you are driving up too.

      November 3, 2013

    • Sian

I am very much a morning person as it happens - but still think it would be more straight forward to stay over on the Friday so I'm making an executive decision, which may or may not spur others on, lol.

      1 · November 3, 2013

  • Stuart R.

Just a quick thought. The start is 9:30am, so you would need to be there and ready earlier so we can get the caving kit organised, say 9am, which is down the road.

Just in case anyone needs a lift from Cardiff, I'll be driving up there. Morgan's already asked so I can probably fit 2 more people and any bits and bobs you have!

    October 15, 2013

    • Owen

Sure, there's plenty of space. Does everyone want to meet up at a central point before heading off so we can all car share?

      November 2, 2013

    • Kate H.

      Sounds good to me!

      November 2, 2013

  • Stuart R.

Hi all. Next weekend is getting close now, so time to get those forms in. I have forms from Kate, Owen and Sian. A couple of people let me know they can get me the info this coming week, so I need those forms or typed info by Monday to secure your places!

I'll send an email shortly from the organiser with a couple more bits of info we need as we have had a huge interest in the weekend!

    See you all next weekend!

    November 2, 2013

  • Stuart R.

For those coming, please do the following for me...
    - Download this form: http://www.swcc.org.uk/aboutswcc/provapp2013.pdf
    - Fill it out and send back to me (you will get an email and hence address shortly)
    - Please answer the following questions too (the meetup site never sent me you responses!)

    1. What days would you like to try caving? Saturday, Sunday or both. At this stage, most people are coming Saturday, so if you want a smaller group or a bit more one-on-one time I would suggest Sunday, but you are welcome either day! (the £10 covers your caving)

    2. Would you like me to book overalls / helmet / light for you (extra £15)

    3. Would you like to stay at the club house either night (extra £5 per night)?

    3. We are organising a group curry dinner for Saturday night after a good days caving. Would you like to join us (extra £4)?

Just bring the cash with you on the day (no credit cards).

Thanks all - should be a great weekend!

    Stuart

Aww that's a shame. If plans change you can still come on the day...can prob still get a set of caving kit.

Hi all. Thought you might be interested to know that we will be having fireworks at the caving club house after caving on Saturday! So if you stay for dinner you can join in with the festivities too :)

Stu, did you get my responses?

Hey guys. I've just been into Go Outdoors. They have £9 wellies if anyone needs some. But as I said before, any hiking boots or moderately sturdy running shoes would be fine if you you mind them getting muddy :) See you all in a couple of weeks!

I think I've got some warms stuff I can wear for this now! How do we sort out hiring the extra bits and bobs and the over night stay and whatnot? Pay all at once or do we need to arrange that separately?

    October 13, 2013

  • Sian

Woo Hoo!!! Thanks for arranging this Stuart :)

Three or four times a year, but I don't always post them on meetup. If you'd like to give it a go, come along :)
