Stone Mountain State Park

Stone Mountain is not immediately visible upon entering the park that bears its name, but this magnificent 600-foot granite dome is well worth the wait. Sunlight and shadows dance across a broad tapestry of stone. White-tailed deer emerge from the security of the forest to graze on meadow grasses at the mountain's base. The scenery is only one attraction of the park.

Test your fly-fishing techniques in more than 20 miles of designated trout waters. Or, with more than 16 miles of trails, take a hike in the park. Designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1975, Stone Mountain is bounded on the north by the Blue Ridge Parkway and on the west by the Thurmond Chatham Game Lands. More than 14,100 acres of mountain beauty offer opportunities for outdoor activities of all kinds.

Had a great time. Thanks Terri and Rick for a great dinner. It was a weekend of me forgetting things. Does anyone know what happened to my chair that I left at the dinner? And what about the pig?

    August 24

    • Arlene S.

Terri, Yes. Not an expensive chair so you can do whatever with it. Don't want to burden you with another thing to pack.

      August 25

    • Ramona H.

We have the pig. Just forgot about it. We will continue to pass it around. Bella, Marion, Joey, and I had a great time. The weekend was just too short. I didn't get enough time to visit with everyone. Can not wait for our next trip.

Rick and I had a great time this weekend. It was our pleasure to host the potluck, but the success of the dinner was due to the delicious contributions and wonderful camaraderie of all the Carolina Campers. We look forward to the next meetup we can attend.

I'm new to this group. So, hello everyone. A couple of questions for someone. 1. how does the reservation work? Are there a number of sites reserved or do each of us call the park to make a reservation of their own?

    2. Will we be grouped together or scattered about the campgrounds? Both are fine by me.

    3. Do we do things as a group at any time? It would be nice meeting a people.

    4. Can kids come or is this adult oriented (not wanting the noise and potential confusion of children).

    thanks!

Hi all. I'm thinking about going, but all the electric sites are taken. Is this area high enough in altitude where it would be comfortable to sleep at night without AC? I don't mind dry camping, but a sweaty bed is no fun.

    August 16

    • Ramona H.

Thinking she posted earlier that she would be willing to share one. But could be wrong. Check with her to be sure'

Hello group! I wanted to ask about the pet policy and tent camping. I know that state parks require all dogs to be contained in a vehicle/tent/camper when the owner is not around but will we be doing anything as a group where dogs will not be allowed? Are the trails are all dog friendly there? And, I have A LOT of gear if anyone needs to borrow anything. I have a 2 room, 6-8p tent and smaller 2p tents if anyone needs that. I haven't made any reservations either but was wondering if there were any tent sites I should or absolutely should not request in the campground? If not, I will try to get near the group. Finally, it's just me so if someone would like to share a site to cut down on the overall cost for the weekend, I would be happy to volunteer in that regard. I hope to make it but that's only if I can get someone to cover for me. I will find out ASAP. Thanks!
