Camping at Chester State Park

Since opening in the 1930s, Chester State Park near Chester, South Carolina has been a haven for hiking, picnicking, boating and fishing for the surrounding communities in the Piedmont Region of South Carolina. Located midway between Columbia and Charlotte, in Chester, South Carolina, the park centers on a 160-acre lake surrounded by a two-mile nature trail through the pine forest. This is my first camping trip with yall. I have 2 kayaks , just wondering if anyone would like to use my extra one this weekend. I will be glad to bring both of them. Also do we need to bring fire wood and are we going to all throw something on the fire to eat as a group? Do we need to bring a dish to share?

    September 4, 2012

    • Michael B.

Hi Gail, no specific plans have been made on this trip for a joint meal. It has not been uncommon for us to end up cooking/sharing but it it not required. I will be bringing a good bit of fire wood and will plan on having a fire on our site that everyone is welcome to sit around.

    Sept. 24 - 30 is take a child outside week. takeachildoutside.org
State parks will have special activities during that week. South Mountain State Park is having Nature Day on Sept. 30 and I will be volunteering that day as part of my 50 hours of volunteer work to celebrate my 50th birthday in Oct. I would love to see some of you there!!

Chester State Park does not participate in the Junior Rager Program. However, 16 SC parks including Kings Mountain and Andrew Jackson do participate in this cool program for kids. There are 3 levels and rewards are given when each of the levels are reached. Just something fun for the kiddies.

OK NC has the jr. ranger program in every one of the 39 state parks. Each state park has a different patch and some parks have their own book. NC has the program for ages 6 -12. It would be great to camp at some NC and SC parks that offer the jr. ranger program. Our kiddies would have such great fun and learn so much at the same time. Of course I would be happy to help. Glad you asked!!

By the way, I looked at some of the activites and Peighton could handle the activities. We can adjust any that may be a little difficult for her.

I may have more friends that are going to camp. I was looking at the map, can someone tell me if there are tent pads on the Rv sites. Also is there a bath house? I see bathrooms but not sure if there are showers as well.
I am bringing my kayak so please count me in for some kayaking.

I believe all of the site accomodate tents or campers. When you reserve them online it should show the maximum equipment length. This park is managed by the SC Park System and has onsite rangers and clean bathrooms with showers.

OK we are up to 6 children. Any more coming? I want to make sure that I have enough crafts for all. They can take them home if they are enjoying the outdoors too much and don't have time to do them. Can you tell that I didn't get to have "Christmas in July" this year? LOL LOL

I've attended a bow tournament there once. Never camped there, I think it will be a lot of people since the weather is cooling down a little. Put up a tent or my hammock. Leave the fifth wheel and get back to the basics. :o)

    August 24, 2012

  • Chris S.

Hey , do any of the sites accommodate a hammock?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
