Cassandra and NetflixOSS - Updates and Benchmarks

This month Adrian Cockcroft from Netflix will be joining us and will be talking about Netflix's use of Cassandra (one of the largest deployments). The Netflix OSS project includes Priam - a tool for assisting the management/automation of Cassandra clusters and Astyanax - a Java driver for Cassandra.

Adrian Cockcroft is the director of architecture for the Cloud Systems team at Netflix. He is leading the open source NetflixOSS program and the Netflix Cloud Prize. Adrian is also well known as the author of several books while a Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems: Sun Performance and Tuning; Resource Management; and Capacity Planning for Web Services. From[masked] he was a founding member of eBay Research Labs.

A reminder that we're a new venue this month - at VisualDNA HQ off Shoreditch High Street, opposite Tesco and NatWest.

Schedule

19:00 - Arrive, networking with beer and pizza
19:30 - Talk by Adrian Cockcroft of Netflix
20:30 - Finish up, more networking and beer
21:00 - Head to nearby pub (probably Brewdog)

In addition to the talks there will be, as usual, plenty of opportunity to meet other Cassandra users and enjoy robust discussions around NoSQL.

Special thanks this month to VisualDNA and their CTO Tomas Cervenka for stepping in at the last minute with a venue and sponsorship.

Big thanks to long term supporter DataStax (hopefully John will get his credit card out  at the pub again). DataStax are one of the largest supporters of the Cassandra project and offer comprehensive support as well as their own distribution of Cassandra, Hadoop and Solr (DataStax Enterprise).

Also, I'd really like to share some of this with people in my company, so it'd be great if the slide deck was made available!

Second time Adrian has spoken at Cassandra London - always fascinating. Too many take-home lessons for me to list, but the 1,000,000 writes at CL:ONE in region A followed 1 second later by reading them in region B (hit rate: 100%) was an eye opener. I need to be braver about embracing eventual consistency.

Note the map shows the wrong building - entrance to VisualDNA is from Shoreditch High Street, opposite Tesco / NatWest. You'll see a VisualDNA logo on the main door.

We are working on migrating our Cassandra Java client library Astyanax from being based on Thrift to the new interface. Also working on support for Vnodes with Priam. Happy to hear from people who would like to help us with Open Source projects at http://netflix.github.com
