Charles River Paddle from Boston(Allston/Brighton) to the Museum of Science

How about enjoying a leisurely kayak on one of the most scenic sections on the Charles River? We will be starting from Boston, in Allston/Brighton and head downstream past (Harvard, M.I.T., and B.U.) to the Esplanade (a great picnic spot!) and Museum of Science, with views of the unforgettable Boston skyline, then paddle back to Allston/Brighton.

This nine-mile round trip stretch of river has no current, allowing painless round trips. Pack a snack/lunch and water.

This is an adult only, and no pet event.

Time:  11:30 am (paddle time, approximately 4+ hours on the water, plus time for a lunch break. Persons planning rentals, please arrive early and plan accordingly)

Location: Charles River Canoe and Kayak,Boston Location ,in Allston Brighton,1071 Soldier's Field Road Boston Allston/Brighton), Massachusetts in front of the rental booth

Kayak rentals are available through Charles River Kayak and Rental http://www.paddleboston.com/boston.php

If you are renting a kayak, please arrive 15 minutes early to start the rental paperwork.

If you plan to kayak less than 4 hours, please make arrangements in advance with someone to paddle back (for safety reasons).

If you have an inflatable kayak please  have it inflated by 11:30 am.

If you are attending this event with an inflatable kayak, you must be able to    confidently keep up with the rest of the group.

Parking location: is at the Charles River Canoe and Kayak Rental Area. See above address.

Parking: is free to those who have their own kayak or who rent one (according to Charles River Kayak Rental staff). Note: Parking signs near the Charles River Rental kiosk say 2 hour parking only, but the staff all park there and have for years and have never gotton a ticket. We can always double double check again when we get there.
Note; I can not guarentee parking, or kayak rental availability, but Charles River Kayak Rental says kayaks and parking are generally available.

More parking options;
If you can't find parking at the Charles River kayak and rental place there is another parking option;

The Artesani Playground in Herter Park located at 1175 Soldiers Field Rd, Brighton, MA.

This is just beyond the kiosk for Charles River Canoe & Kayak, and the parking lot is labeled "D", the one at Charles River Canoe & Kayak I think is labeled "B".

The plan is to meet at the Rental booth at 11:30 am.  I will have my red kayak with me.

Weather: Note; If the weather is inclement on Saturday, we can always reschedule this to the next day or week.

If there is interest; we can explore post kayak dining options (perhaps the nearby Stonehearth Pizza in Allston, or???

    FYI, article from THE BOSTON HERALD

    LOVE THAT DIRTY WATER
    After 50 years, swimming returns to Charles

    By Ariel Rodriguez
    July 14, 2013

    For the first time in 50 years, the public was invited yesterday to swim in the Charles River.
    The river, which was once famous for its filth, saw dozens take the plunge near the Hatch Shell as part of the Charles River Conservancy’s first public recreational swim.

    “For more than a decade, the Conservancy has been working to bring public swimming back to the Charles River,” said Charles River Conservancy President Renata von Tscharner.

    Recreational swimming in the Charles was banned in the 1950s because of pollution, the conservancy said, but since the EPA established the Clean Charles River Initiative in 1995, its water quality now meets standards for swimming on most days.

    Just got off the wait list last night and am super excited about joining you guys! I don't know how many people are planning to rent, but I have a season pass with Charles River Canoe and Kayak, and with the pass, up to two guests can get a 20% rental discount. I'm planning on arriving by about 11, so if anyone wants to take advantage of this find me by the Kiosk then (I'm a redhead, will be wearing a bright blue shirt, black leggings and a big floppy white sunhat, and carrying a big black canvas bag).

    Yow, did the later NOAA Forecasts today -- oop, last night -- predict anything about all the late cancellations falling out of the sky? (No criticism meant towards anyone, just a general observation about how quickly things start churning about towards event time (like me headed into wind or towards waves of any size) across many Meetup groups. And yet we still have a full group as of my own made up press time right now!

      Heidi, I decided not to use the # you sent out to give you a call right at this moment (solid judgement call), but thanks for organizing and for keeping the many moving parts of this particular meetup going in a positive direction for quite some time now. (Oh, and I met this guy Ben working Kendall Fri. eve. but who usually works Boston, and he'll be starting ~11a Sat. He re-re-confirmed that the 2-hour parking signs are *not* a concern as they're used only to prevent overnight parking) so there's one double-check hopefully saved for you. W/ my temp. unlimited rental pass, I'll be trying to get over to park and rent there on the early side (el oh el...certainly doing a lot to make that happen now) just in case a nice Sat. brings out an exceptionally large Sat. rental turnout. Anyway, see many of you soon!

    The weather has improved for Saturday, so the paddle is on for Saturday. NOAA Forecast tomorrow for Boston: cloudy, with a high near 78. East wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

    More parking options;

    This is just beyond the kiosk for Charles River Canoe & Kayak, and the parking lot is labeled "D", the one at Charles River Canoe & Kayak I think is labeled "B". Anyway the one at 1175 Soldiers Field Rd is very, very large and parking would not be an issue. Thanks to Todd for this suggestion!

    If time permits, when you get down to the M.O.S. hang a left and paddle around the water fountain at the Cambridgeside Galleria. Nice little side trip.

    Paddling time; According to Charles River and Kayak rental in Boston, Paddle time is about 1 1/2 to 2 hours one way to the M.O.S. . About 4 hours round trip.

    Any rental people who only want to paddle one way can drop their kayaks off at the kendall square rental take out. Call the rental place for details.

    Post kayaking: Any ideas what people want to do after the kayak? What is the consensus of the group? I’ve suggested the Stone Hearth pizza in Allston. But we’ll have our kayaks, so parking at the Pizza place maybe a problem. Maybe if the weather is nice we could do a take out and have the food delivered to us, and picnic by the Charles River Rental area (bring our chairs/or blanket) .
    Here are some places that can deliver;
    Stone hearth pizza web site; http://stonehearthpizza.com/
    Thai food; http://www.sweetpepperbrighton.com/
    Other food ideas or ice cream perhaps???

    Love that clean Charles River water: According to the Charles River Kayak And Rental (specifically Jim) he says that the Charles River won a urban award 2 years ago for having clean water. Also, he said the parking signs near the kiosk say 2 hour parking only, but they all park there and have for years and have never gotton a ticket. We can always double double check again when we get there.

    Weather: Note; If for some reason the weather is inclement on Saturday, we can always reschedule this to the next day or week

    Heidi, it might a little more then 9 miles, I think what the website say s is: "The Charles River Basin consists of nine miles of flatwater between Watertown Dam and the new Charles River Lock and Dam".......... Using the address of 11 Science Park Boston, MA (Museum of Science) and 1071 Soldiers Field Rd, Boston, MA as an end point it is 5.5 miles one way. So the round trip will more likely be about 11 miles

      I checked with Charles River Kayak and Rental in Boston about the length, and he said it was a little over 9 miles round trip( about 1 1/2 hours paddle time each way ) from the Alston Brighton rental to the Museum of Science.

    Everyone please bear in mind when you reserve for future events; if there is one spot left and you sign up as a plus 1, the database will skip you and go to the next person Rsvping. For some reason, the meetup databases can't split a +1 RSVP nor can they exceed the the number of maximun number of RVPS listed in the meetup. Hope this clarifys.
