Early Evening Cruise Along the Charles

EVENT: Lets end the summer on the right note with an early evening cruise down a leisurely part of the Charles River from beautiful Nahanton Park in Newton. We will enjoy 2 hours of kayaking Shortly before sundown (7:00) and then maybe we can go someplace afterward to relax.

MEET: At 4:00, with kayaking from 4:30 to 6:30. We will gather at the Charles River Canoe & Kayak boathouse. The entrance to the park is: 455 Nahanton St. (Kendrick St.), Newton, MA.

COST: Single kayak: $15/hr. There are a limited number of kayaks so it would be a good idea to get there early in order to request a kayak.  Anyone who has their own can launch at the boathouse.

AS A CONDITION OF ATTENDING THIS MEETUP, YOU AGREE TO: Hold harmless, and indemnify the organizers and their relations and heirs, and all members and participants of the Meetup group from any and all claims for injury, illness, death, and/or property damage including those caused by negligence, ignorance, inexperience and other reasons. You also agree to assume all mental, physical, financial, and/or other risk associated with this meetup. Kayaking, camping, hiking, bicycling, and other activities pose inherent risks and dangers. Ed, Thanks for all the great shots, I know it takes a lot of work to get all of those photos so we all owe you a lot of thanks for something we can go back to look at and share with others. I am glad to read how much people enjoyed the trip, that is part of this satisfaction you get as the event's coordinator. I will definitely run another visit to the Charles but probably not until next year. If any of you wants to run Charles River trip this Fall send a message to Todd about planning it

Please organize another one!! I'm so bummed!! I went to the Charles River Kayak in Newton but apparently to the wrong one! I went to the one off of 128. I waited and waited but didn't see anyone. Then at 4:30 someone that worked there told me you guys were likely at the other one in Newton. I didn't know there was another one. Ugh! So my pooch and I kayaked by ourselves. Beautiful... but wish I was with all of you! Ugh!

I am home today and then gone again tomorrow until Sunday this time,if anyone wants to try to get through to me I will be checking my mail a number of times between this afternoon and tomorrow morning. In regards to the question about putting in at their dock Betsy is right, they do allow us to use their launch facilities.

    August 12, 2013

  • Ed. O

Is there a put in for non-renters at this facility? I am familiar with the Alburndale Newton rental, but not this one.

    August 11, 2013

    • Betsy L

Hi Ed, yes they do allow you to put in your own kayak off the dock.

      August 11, 2013

  • Betsy L

Sorry I won't be able to make this. I do know there is limited parking in the two lots so suggest people try and carpool. There is extra parking at Cutler Park a short walk away.

I was there last summer, rented a sea kayak, and paddled up to an island that had a lighthouse! They also rent paddle boards! If someone mention that we have a group going we can get a discount! I was out less than 4 hours paid about $30.00 but parking is an issue tho, it is metered!

HI David. I just went down to Nantastic Beach and rented at Nantastic Kayaks. It was really a fun day. You can kayak on the bay side, get out for a swim and then kayak up a riven that empties into the bay. They will let you stay in their parking lot after you finish Kayaking while you walk across the street to Nantastic Beach for a wonderful swim and/or a ride on the Carousel (flying horses :). Single boats: $20/hr or $40 fr 3 hrs. Tandem Kayaks are $60 for 3 hrs.

Merrimack River in Newburyport at the Cashman Park boat ramp. Paddle up the river with the incoming tide, explore Town Creek in Salisbury, then head over to "High Rock" for some swimming and jumping from the cliff. (Swimming also available at Deer Island, just a bit further up river.) Catch the tide change back to Newburyport, then go out to dinner at Michael's Harborside. There's a walking path straight to the restaurant from the boat launch.

This paddle would be appropriate for sea kayaks with a length of 14' or more and bulkheads front and back. Recreational boats not appropriate for this paddle.

Kayak rentals are available at Plum Island Kayak [masked]), just a short distance away on the other side of the Route 1 bridge. I have worked part-time for this shop over the past 8 summers, so I know the area quite well. I would be happy to act as leader on this trip.

The Martha's Vineyard company is Island Spirit Kayak. Also, in Boston I usually rent from Boston Canoe and Kayak, paddleboston.com They have 5 rental locations, and you can do either one-way rentals or out& back from same location.

Just wanted to let you all know that I kayaked off the reserve at Plum Island about a week ago. Although, anyone that knows me understands that I am almost completely covered up, I was incessantly attacked by insects. Thank goodness I wore a head net. I am covered with bites from some kind of fly that bit THROUGH my REI shirt. Just the upper part of my back has at least twelve bite marks. I think they are greenhead flies. They are like little lions.

Hingham Shipyard has an EMS that rents kayaks, launch from Hingham Harbor or Wessagusset Yacht Club (plenty of parking in either place). Paddle to Webb State Park, Grape Island, Thompson Island, etc. Afterwards there's plenty of eateries in the Hingham Shipyard and you might be able to catch on open door concert.

Lee's Mill Landing Moultonborough Bay is the northeast corner of Lake Winnipesaukee. There are very few boats on this part of the lake and the bay has beautiful views of Mt Roberts. The put-in is on Lee's Mills Road, Moultonborough, NH. From Moultonborough Center, proceed 4/10 mile south on Route 25. Turn Left onto Blake road. At the end of Blake Road, turn right onto Lee's Mills Road and proceed to the end. Kayak rentals are available @ http://wildmeadowcanoes.com/assorted , which is about 8 miles away. Rental includes car top carrier.

Head over to Buckey's for a bite to eat.
