Re: [Sailing-San-Diego-Catamaran] Taking back my previous Posting

I am a member of the Sailing San Diego Catamaran meetup group and also the founder of another sailing networking group which uses the meetup platform. That other group seeks to connect those who want to sail to those who sail.  I am also a member (dues paying) of a commercial charter club.  That charter club employs  many (male and female) who are in the same age group that the original email stated.

When a business hires someone who is in a position of hostess (or host or counter person), the employee is part of the marketing of the business.  Appearance matters.  It doesn't matter if the person is male or female.

The person chartering the cat for the proposal event specifically stated the requirements.  The management of the Charter business was working on behalf of the client to fulfill those requirements. So my view is that there was no discrimination.

To Bobby,

I appreciate your actions and I'm saddened by the manner in which some members of the group have caused your attempt to extend an opportunity to the membership to flounder.  You were following the wishes of your client, who was (is) creating a certain environment for a very special life event.  His friends and family (including his future family) will be involved, and his attempt to create a certain positive setting, including a captain, and hostess should be respected.  He knows who is invited and knows what he is trying to achieve.

You were obviously hoping that someone in the group would be appropriate, or have a family member who would be appropriate for this.  It was an opportunity, which has now been lost.

To other members of the group -

Organizing a group using the meetup platform is fought with challenges.  When you open the group to any and all who wish to join, you are dealing with a complete spectrum of people.  You are not going to please all people all of the time.

One of the more difficult aspects of organizing such a group is that you provide an opportunity for members who do not invest anything in the group to benefit from the group.

In my view, no discrimination was involved.  Certain requirements were stated.  If you don't fit those requirements, then it is not for you.

Had a 'MeetUp' been involved with an open RSVP, and someone was removed from the open RSVP list because of a specific characteristic of that person . . . then maybe discrimination might have been involved.

I say might because a sailing group must respect the right of a captain to 'build a crew'.  That captain has to use his or her judgement in assessing with little or no data who is appropriate or inappropriate for a given sailing plan.  A captain must take not only ability, including physical and social ability into account.  He or she must be able to pair knowledgeable and skilled sailors with newbies.  It is important for the skipper to create a compatible environment.  That is not an easy task, and members of sailing groups should respect the efforts of the organizers of such groups.

Sincerely Yours,

John

You should know that when you hit "reply", your message goes to everyone in the meet-up group, not just the original poster. I'm sorry that you took such exception to the post, but my little quip had absolutely nothing to do with your response. I was just having my own fun with the original poster. There is no reason to be mean.

I am the person who made the comments and I am quite shocked by the lack of awareness and sensitivity in this group.  Discrimination in any form is unacceptable and, yes, I would have written exactly the same comments if it was discrimination against males.  Too many battles have been fought for there to still be so many small minded, self-centered people who are unaware of the reasons it is problematic.  For those of you who felt the need to write rude, insulting replies, you might note that my initial comments were made only to the poster, and not to the group at large.  I guess that's too much consideration to expect from others.

Hey Bobbi,
The (not so)funny thing about this is (in two parts):
  1. If you were looking for a guy for the gig with the same parameters, you wouldn't have heard a peep...
  2. This kind of casting call is totally typical for special events but now you have to go to a modeling or talent agency to get the talent and you (or the client) are going to spend a lot more more money when some lucky Sailing San Diego Catamarans member could have had a couple nice hours on the water and picked up a few bucks.
It's a shame that a small minded person with a personal beef of some sort has to spoil things for others...

I am in total agreement with the other respondents to this post, you're doing a great job... don't let this individual get you down!

Best Rgds,
Ed

Ahoy All,
I sent out an email earlier today asking for a hostess to help us out on Saturday. Our client has requested a very specific type (age and sex) of person in the roll of the hostess. Not only the hostess but also the Captain. He had asked for a specific type of sparkling wine, specific type of Italian food, specific artist singing a specific song and so on. He was hiring and paying for that person, NOT WCM.  He is trying to "Cast" the perfect movie for his proposal to his hopefully soon to be wife.

Well, in my email I asked for a "certain age" "female" to apply. That was wrong. One of our members was very upset by this posting, and for that I am sorry. Her words, "This is not only obnoxiously sexist, ............".  Anybody who knows me, KNOWS this is the furtherest from the truth.

Therefore, please disregard the previous email. I will not be hiring anybody from our meetup club. If I offended anybody else by that email, please except my apology as well.

Bobbi
