Super Moon on Cane Creek

***This is a cross post with Catawba Riverkeeper***

We will meet at the Highway 9 Boat Landing at 7 pm to kayak on Cane Creek under this phenomenal moon. I did this paddle under a full moon earlier this Spring, and it's breathtaking. This is a great opportunity for any level paddler.

As this is a night paddle, you are required to have PFD, Whistle, and a light. You can fulfill the light requirement with a hand held flashlight. Most find that a headlamp works great.

Like a an adventure documentary, should we go back or keep going. At 8:45pm, five said Keep going. The sun is down the the moon is up with spooky clouds around it. Beaver sightings, a snake, a deer, owls, crazy loud frogs, and alien, mutant, cannibal, hillbillies were all observed eerie head lamps. Some creepy swamp stories and some bad jokes completed this awesome voyage. Next run we need to be better supplied, (wine and snacks). We returned to home port at 11:00pm with 8.23 miles behind us. Good one guys and gals. Dan ,

This was my first night paddle……and it will not be my last. Had a great time with some great company!

What a perfect paddle. The group I was with was willing to go as far as we could and turn around when it got dark. How fun to take the twists and turns in the creek in the dark with just our headlights. What a great first for me! Easy-going people with can-do attitudes, great weather with not a drop on us. Loved it!

Turned out to be a beautiful evening. The moon popped out from time to time between the clouds. Otherwise it was fun paddling by headlight.

Weather was perfect, light breeze, glassy water and great company! Moon appeared later, with owls and frogs putting on a concert.

My kayak is on a trailer. Will there be enough room at the put in for me to handle and park a trailer?

    June 23, 2013

    • Harold J.

Normally yes, but if all 27 people come in 27 cars it will be congested. Best to get your trailer there a little early

Is this the same Cane Creek beyond Waxhaw?

    June 22, 2013

    • Bubba B.

This is the same creek from Waxhaw, but we'll be on the Lancaster part of it. See map above.

Are we going down and coming back or will we need to drop kayaks off and drive vehicles to take out point?

    June 22, 2013

    • Bubba B.

Put in and take out at the same place, no shuttle needed.

      June 22, 2013

  • A.j. R.

Is this water canoe friendly? Also is calm enough for a kid and a very water nervous wife to come along in said canoe?

    June 21, 2013

    • Bubba B.

This is all flat water, should be OK.

Is there a chance to rent a kayak or so? Since I don't own one but would like to come.

I have a 10' sit-on-top that you are welcome to borrow. It's one that I love to use to teach children with, and it tracks extremely straight. Would you like to borrow it? If you have used a sit-on-top in the past, they are much more stable that sit-in's to me. I can also bring a life jacket/paddle for you.....

You can also rent a kayak from Catawba River Expeditions [masked]) if you prefer. Hope this helps....

If I can find a kayak and a way to transport it, I am there! :)

    June 13, 2013

    • Jeff A.

Hi Delia. I have an extra one if you'd like to use it. If you have a couple of pool noodles, it would be pretty easy to fasten to the top of your car... I'm near Central and Eastway.

Hi Jeff, that is very kind, thanks!! I have sent you a private message re: logistics.

    Sunset: 2040; Moonrise: 2055.
"The Full Moon of June is usually called the Mead Moon, Strawberry Moon, Rose Moon or Thunder Moon.
This year the largest Full Moon of the year will occur on June 22/23. The moon’s elliptical orbit brings it close to the Earth at some point every month, called perigee. When perigee falls close to Full Moon, as it does on June 23 at 7 a.m. EDT, we get what someone recently christened a “SuperMoon.” To the naked eye it looks no different, but it’s nice to know it’s only 356,991 km. away. Expect higher tides than usual as a result." Space.com
