Meet at Ft. Mill dam at 6:00pm or earlier on Wednesdays to paddle to River Walk take out. We would need to shuttle our cars of course, so we should factor this in. This should be a 1.5hr - 2hr quick paddle. I will keep this one open, as I have most Wednesday evenings free.

I am going to err on the side of caution today and cancel the paddle. I am not comfortable with the water levels being where they are today, and with more rain on the way it will not get any better. I will re-post this paddle for Wed of next week and hope for better weather.

    Thank you, Kelley

I wouldn't use the term "err". Good call.

Love this stretch of the Catawba. Live in South Charlotte so can probably make it regularly. Kelley - will you be there even when there's a threat of scattered showers? Last year I came out to Bill Galloway's Tuesday paddles and there was always a threat, Bill never cancelled and it NEVER rained on us. He kept track of the storms through an AP on his phone.

I have been monitoring the cfs, and physically looking at the river twice daily. With all the rain we have been getting I am very hesitant to go out this Wednesday. I do not think I am ready to paddle this river at the height I have seen it this week. If however the cfs drops to a "normal" level we will hit the water. I will update today and through tomorrow.

Thanks so much Kelley, for being responsible and keeping us informed. I truly appreciate it.

A river as large as the Catawba, 7000 cfs may not be a problem,as that is measured of course only at the gauge and the river will slow considerably further on. So fast water may not be a problem, the volume of water might be, but with more volume you have less speed. I think this is correct. I'm trying to recall how many cfs we usually do the Catawba so a comparison could be made.

Hope to see you on the water soon

Thanks for the explanation, good to know the facts, I won't be doing any cfs's at that rate either. Thanks for clearing it up for all to know.

On a "normal" release, the Rock Hill gage is around 3800 - 4000. With it hovering between 8,000 and 9,000 that's quite a bit more push. Plus we seem to be under repeated flash flood warnings.

You also need to think about the fact you may not have water. While it can still be done. VERY rocky and difficult. You can get flow release info for 3 days here: http://www.duke-energy.com/lakes/scheduled-flow-releases.asp

I just sent CC Williams an email with the same question asked of Ray. CC manages all of the kayaking and canoeing recreation for the City of Rock Hill and is in the water in that area almost every day.

I just looked at the gauge report on the info CC sent me and it appears not enough water is not the problem. They have scheduled a release from 2:00 - 8:00 pm for Wednesday . It is currently running over 7,000cfs ( and was over 10,000 yesterday). That is too much water & too fast for my skill level so I'm forced to withdraw. I'll have a look at the one Dan is scheduling for Saturday.

I will only do the portion to river walk since this is a weekday activity

I'm in for 6:00 pm at the dam parking lot on Wednesday.

I was hoping to just keep it open for all Wednesdays. I will post it weekly. Thanks.

I'll have to agree with Andy on this one. If you post it, they will come. Keep in mind that this is a very short paddle, and will appeal to the 'locals' around Rock Hill and Fort Mill.

Kelley, you'd probably have better response if you set a date for the meet up. It's hard for many to commit when they don't know when it is.

I was hoping to get a few more people for this one. Mary I can do Wed for sure of next week if you want to meet up on Wednesdays. I was thinking we would have to shuttle, so message back and we can aim for next Wed.

sorry ... I had a different "Kelly" in mind. Ignore question about "clinic"

    June 25, 2013

  • Mary K.

can do Wed, not Thurs. Do you have a shuttle at River Park? Is this instead of your kayak clinic?
