Tybee Island (Savannah,GA)

It has been a few years since we last visited Tybee Island. We gained a bit of knowledge through our 1st visit. Such as it really is better to go out during a lower tide. We will again be camping at the awesome Skidaway Island State Park. Be advised that you can not reserve a specific site here. You reserve a general site and then when you get there you claim the site that you want.

We will paddle out of Lazaretto Creek and visit Cockspur Island Lighthouse. Our 1st visit brought us out at high tide and we could not go to the lighthouse. There are also other things to do in the area as we can visit the Ft. Pulaski National Park.

We will meet at Lazaretto Creek Landing at 10:00 am .on Saturday Aug.17th Low tide is at 11:20 so we will ride the tide out and then when we return it will be with the incoming tide. Love it when a plan comes together... Here are directions to the launch site: Lazaretto Creek.

A little history about Lazaretto Creek: Georgia’s original charter had an antislavery provision, based on founder Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe’s opposition to the “peculiar” institution. But Georgia’s planters, seeing the profits made from the use of slave labor by their South Carolina plantation neighbors, overruled Oglethorpe’s wishes and in 1749 repealed this provision and passed an act permitting the establishment of slavery in the young colony. This act ordered the erection of a lazaretto, or quarantine station, on Tybee Island. In 1767, approximately 100 acres on Tybee’s extreme western tip at the mouth of what became Lazaretto Creek were purchased from Josiah Tattnall to build the quarantine station. The next year, several hospital buildings were completed. Here, voyagers who arrived ill were treated and those who died were buried in unmarked graves. The lazaretto was in continuous use until 1785, when the buildings were in disrepair and a new station was built on Cockspur Island.

Finally got my pictures downloaded--Just in time for the next paddle--one of these days I'm going to take a day off-yeah!!
Great fun on the paddle, Gail especially enjoyed watchng the dolphins mate. We were very fortunate with the weather--the worst was driving down there. As usual, Gail and I enjoyed the fellowship and camping as much as the paddle--great group of paddlers!! Dinner at Stingray's was a hoot and guess what--no new relocations!!

What a beautiful day. Ray timed the tides perfectly. The lighthouse was accessable to get to and we could climb into it. The water was so calm that we paddled the river out to the ocean surrounded by dolphins. Then to the beach for lunch and a swim. It was an easy paddle back with tide heiping us. Wonderful trip!!! By the end of this summer we can write a manual on camping in the rain and enjoying it.

Don, I already have a site. But I will gladly carry your boat on my trailer for you. You would just need to get it to me before that Friday.

I just reserved a site as well. They are $60 for two nights on electric sites. When you get there they will give you a tag so that you go and claim a site. Also note that they will charge $5/car in addition. These are great reasons to share rides and campsites.
