Mother Nature dealt us a straight flush on Saturday: hardly a cloud in a Carolina blue sky, just the right amount of water in a terrific river, and perfect temperatures. Mike, you hit one out of the ball park with this weekend. This might have been the largest paddling meetup we've had but certainly the largest for a road trip. Thank you everyone who turned up for making this a wonderful day. I didn't give this a 5 star rating because I think we got way too stretched out before the low water bridge and I fear we may have disheartened some of the newer, less experienced paddlers.

Another wonderful trip on the New River. Many thanks for your patience and your help in launching and portaging this large group of fine group of paddlers. I'm constantly amazed at how this Meetup concept has pulled together such a huge group of folks with common interests. I'm looking forward to doing it again.

My 1st time on this section. Very beautiful. Loved going past the pine forest and the smell of the wood.
Very large group and it went off with no problems. We had a few swimmers, but I think that they still enjoyed it.
If you want a relaxing paddle with a few ripples and beautiful scenery...This is it!
    Thank you everyone.

What a beautiful river and fantastic day on the water! Thanks to everyone who helped with organizing shuttles, putting in, taking out, portaging, rescuing...you really earned your paycheck on this trip! And thanks to all who helped me with my spill & recovery, only a jug of water and a smidge of dignity were lost. Nice to meet so many nice people, too (just don't quiz me on names later)!

Mike, thanks for organizing this wonderful day on the water. Thank you to all the men who helped us in and out of the water today, which was no easy task with the huge turnout. A heartfelt thanks to Andy and Larry for getting me out of a tight jam! I do mean that in the most literal sense! So nice to catch up with old friends and meet new ones on such a perfect paddle.

I was in Va. this weekend, there is good water for paddling on the New River. Forecast for weekend is high 80's, with 30 per cent chance of spot showers in the afternoon. Should be a good weekend to be on the water.

Linda...would you like to use my 2nd plastic kayak? Mike said it would be ok to use my little plastic kayak for this stretch.

      August 22, 2013

Hey Mara! Thank you for your offer. I'm sorry! i just saw your message. Right or wrong, I'm gonna bring my Soul Sister (wooden boat) and see what happens~ I've just been hankering to get her on a river. If it looks undoable, I'm thinking I can find some fun things to see and do around the area and make a nice day trip out of it. Thanks again~See you soon! :)

Will be doing just the one day on Saturday & driving back. I have room for another person (2 persons if you want to get cozy or ride in the short-person back seat of my truck!) & boat(s) if anyone wants to ride share! Coming from Rock Hill, up i77 through Charlotte....

    August 18, 2013

    • Jack L.

Carla is looking for a ride from Rock Hill area. Do you still have room? Call me[masked]-2444. Jack

      August 22, 2013

    • Jack L.

Hi Susan, I tried to send a reply to find out if you still have room. Carla's membership has not been approved yet and has no way of responding so I'm contacting you on her behalf. Let know if you still have room and I'll pass it on to her. I initially had her down as one of my two guests but Bea and I decided to spend Sat night and hike on Sun. Carla needs to get back Sat night.

I will be driving up Saturday morning and staying Saturday night. What time are you planning on getting on the river Saturday morning?

    August 22, 2013

    • Mike J.

Meet at the park at 10 am. load up boats and drive upstream to the put in. We are floating into the State Park. If you are driviing to the put in, be there by 10:30. Please be on time. Allow your self 2 1/2 hrs from Charlotte. Early morning fog in the mountains will slow you down somewhat. Be safe.

      August 23, 2013

  • Andy H.

Wow! 38 paddlers, good water levels, and the promise of fine weather. This is going to be fun!

    August 22, 2013

  • Bonnie

Is the 221 access campground far from where we are meeting to put in on Sat. morning? Can someone give me directions to the camping area?

    August 22, 2013

    • Mike J.

The camping area is right at the access. Just have to walk into your campsite or use the wheelbarrows provided by the camp.

      August 22, 2013

  • Mike J.

Andy, with Ray, myself, and Dave all bringing trailers, we should be able to reduce the number of drivers a good bit. I thought there was a pretty good sized parking lot there. Guess we'll see just how good it is. See you Saturday.

    August 22, 2013

    • Andy H.

I'm sure it will be fine. They're going to shuttle cars over to Wagoner anyhow and how long does it take to offload a tube! ;-) Bringing Jolly Roger and cannon, for sure!

      August 22, 2013

  • Andy H.

Just noticed that about 22 members of the Hickory Outdoor meetup are putting in at the same place on Saturday at about the same time. They're tubing but parking may be difficult.

I am new to the area and not familiar with the New River. I have a Wilderness Systems Cape Lookout 155 (15 - 1/2'), given the comment on Class 1 rapids is my kayak too long for this section of the river?

    August 22, 2013

    • Mike J.

At this time of year, this section is usually quite low and a long boat such as yours would be getting stuck at every little riffle, such as another member's did last year. However, with water levels up I don't really think you'd have a problem this time. If you'd have any problem, it would be in the first 3-4 miles from the put in to Waggoner Access, and then the river gradually increases in size. If that's all you have, bring it.

      August 22, 2013

  • Mara

just booked #29 for sat night in the us 221 access loop- and now realize I could have probably shared...anyway...more camping room if needed.

    July 27, 2013

  • Mike J.

Good comment Harold. We rarely have any new paddlers with us on this beautiful river, and it's within such a reasonable driving distance of Rock Hill and Charlotte. Over 70 miles of great paddling up there and only two and a half hours from home. See you in a few weeks!

    July 24, 2013

  • Harold J.

Looking at the potential attendees for this paddle, I see most are veterans of paddling on the New River. For those that haven't signed up and might be interested, but worry they haven't got the experience, please sign up. This section ought to be named Introductory Paddling on the New River Class 101. There are a couple of small shelves and a riffle or three. The current moves right along and it is a great confidence builder for the challenges that will appear when you paddle the next section of the river.
