Leave on Thursday May 1 and return on Sun May 4. Light and simple is the way to travel as campers must carry all provisions to camp sites. Thank you for the kind words, I have to agree that she is. :) Jeff, we have only had our kayaks since the end of March and this was our fourth time taking them out. Katy has only ever been on 6 trips including this one. I have only a few more than that under my belt from years ago. This was our first coastal experience. We loved it though.

What about the song "BEAR ISLAND BLUES"
We got to Bear island after a 5 hour car ride
    da da da da
Had to struggle with are boats, because it was low tide. da da da da
The next 5 hours setting up was just a blur
    da da da da
Then Sophia had to be rescued by a helo cop ter
    da da da da
Sometimes I feel I was born to lose
cuz i'm struggling with those Bear Island Blues.

Some poetry for you guys at Meena's request. Written Saturday night and probably a little moonshine fueled: The waves are washing stars ashore,
    never seen this many before.
In my pockets and my sleeves,
    like sand ubiquitous beyond belief;
I stand alone and gaze beyond
a million terrifying and awe inspiring miles,
behold how small and fleeting I am,
and how much I still feel part of everything.
    Good night.

What a fun little adventure that was. Worth some experience points. Having Meena as a roommate, Dee popping up from time to time, the Swansboro "Yacht Club", Joe getting "whooped" at the pirate fest, lol, and great company in general. Uking you guys at sunset was a pleasure too.

Great group and great fun! Loved the "yacht club" also. We logged 22 miles total. Next time I would bring better bug protections for the sand gnats at the primitive sites.

Excellent trip! It was a great experience kayaking to a barrier island with such a fun group of paddlers. The pictures tell the story--Bear Island, Bogue Inlet and the wetland marshes are beautiful. Thank you all for posting the photos.

Someone, likely one of our group, left a paddle on the dock at the visitor center takeout this morning. It is a yellow plastic EMS with an aluminum handle. The park service employee at the dock thought it was left by one of us and I presently have it. Please let me know if it is yours so I might arrange to get it back to you.

Checking several different weather sources and Thursday good chance for tail end of storms. Friday-Saturday and Sunday looking pretty good with highs in low 70s partly/mostly cloudy and wind less than 10 knots. No or low rain %.
May change my departure from Thursday to Friday, business more than weather.

I will be canceling my campsite reservation on Tuesday if anyone needs a campsite. It is site #7.

    April 28

  • Daniel D.

I checked today [masked]) and there are 7 campsites left. They allow 2 tents and 6 people per site. We'll coordinate our meet up time on the mainland with the flow of the tide. There may be 2 groups going out, those arriving on Thursday and those arriving on Friday. More specifics will be posted as the date gets closer.

    December 16, 2013

    • Ray C.

If you are arriving at an odd hour. The trail is very easy to follow. If it is low tide you may have to do a little bit of walking and pull your boat.

      December 16, 2013

    • Jack O.

I understand that the trails not so easy to follow in the dark. Friends were just out there last month as cautioned that with strong winds it took them two hours to get to the campsites. They are experienced canoe paddlers.

      April 28

  • David N.

Dan--we still on for McDonalds Thurs. AM
or did you find one on the right side.
Looks like it's going to be wet and windy, don't forget your poncho and kayak skirt. Gail and I will be in site #1

    1 · April 28

  • Addie

I can't leave until 3:30 on Thu. and it would be dark to paddle across then and set up camp. So, I'd like to arrive on Fri. May 2nd. Is there anyone else who plans to paddle out to Bear Island on Friday?

    April 8

    • Mary Lou S.

I'll be with the Friday flotilla.

      April 9

    • Meena

My plan is to go with the Friday Flotilla also.

      April 26

Recently finished four horrible projects and looking to go to the wilderness to hide from the corporate world. I can pair up on a campsite or get another one. Andy H. Still have a spot?

    April 24

    • Jennifer Blanchfield O.

We will have room on site 3 if you need a place. There are just two of us with one small tent.

      April 24

    • Daniel R.

Sounds Great, I will take you up on that. I plan on leaving Charlotte Thursday AM per plan. Looking forward to seeing the old and new friends.

      April 24

  • Mary Lou S.

I'm liking the way you think Andy! Wow. Even if you don't get my jokes - this more than makes up for it. Escort service. Cool.

    April 22

  • Daniel D.

Andy has prepared a tentative paddling schedule for anyone who would like to join in for a group paddle.
    Friday:
    Low tide 4:43am
Approx 9:00am - head into meet up with the Friday group who say they're meeting at 10am.

Approx 11am - escort Friday group back to Bear Island
Afternoon - either play in surf or paddle down landward side of Bear
    Low tide 4:25pm

    Saturday:
    Low Tide 5:28am

    High tide 11:18am

    Approx 10:30am - leave campground
    High tide 12:06pm

I missed whether or not John B. was bringing his canoe... He is the gear hauler isn't he?

    April 18

    • Mary Lou S.

Ray. I called and the ferry will take stuff. I might bring my chair but that is all I asked about.

      April 18

    • John B.

Doubtful will bring canoe, dont need two boats to manage out and return if weather got bad. Always the ferry per Mary Lou for gear hauling to improve minimalist island camping experience.
