Cedar Creek (Congaree National Park) Bannister Bridge- Cedar Creek Landing

  • I am going to schedule this as a 1st organized meetup for the year. This is about a 7 mile paddle that runs through Congaree National Park. It is a slow moving blackwater creek that has many twists and turns. While any boat will work here, short boats are great for getting around these bends. I checked the water level and it is great right now. Of course this is subject to change. Here is the graph if you wish to follow: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/sc/nwis/uv/?site_no=02169672

Anything over 3 feet here is great and over 7 can be very bad. I ask that everyone that attends this PLEASE bring a drybag with a change of clothing. I have a few extra bags if someone would care to borrow.

Please be on time as we will need to run a shuttle. Bring a snack and water as well as the appropriate clothing. This is a very beautiful section of the park.

Water's at 9 1/2 feet and rising! I don't mind a cold day, and I usually do take a thermos of coffee or hot chocolate, but I think that's going to be too much water to see the trail.

The rain predicted there for Thursday sure isn't going to help things. Is this going to be another one of "those" years?

      January 1, 2014

    • Mike J.

I hope not Andy. Rain tomorrow is going to tend to hold up that rain gauge curve, I really don't believe it'll get below the 7' level by Saturday morning, but it might! Not sure when Ray will 'call' this one, ...but we can always go to the gun show in Concord this weekend.

One thing for sure is it's going to be a cold day on the water. (low 40's as predicted during the day). Many of you are backpackers and own miniature stoves that take up little room in your boat. A stove, bottle or two of water, metal cup, and a styrofoam cup of soup makes for a delightful hot lunch, along with a hot cup of coffee or chocolate. You won't be sorry if you bring these things along!

I am going to make a prediction. I think the water will be at 5-6 feet for our paddle. And it will be a bright sunny day.

The kayak I have is 14.5.........do you think I will have any problems using it here?

    December 28, 2013

    • Ray C.

No. You shouldn't. I have used a sea kayak here.

Water level is coming down following the heavy rains last week. Lighter rain coming this week, but I think we will be ok. I will cancel if over 7 feet. I have paddled higher here, but safety for a group this size comes 1st. Here is levels the park service recommends. Even though they have taken groups at 10 feet.

Gayle, I still have room, do you live outside of York? If so you could just come by my house in Newport and load up your boat at 7 am on Saturday morning. Mike J.

    December 23, 2013

  • Mike J.

This is a great trip through an area that's normally occupied by bugs, snakes, and other critters. This is best time to do it! Anyone up for car pooling from Rock Hill? Dan, Marvin, Bill, Addie, or others?

    1 · December 21, 2013

    • Daniel D.

Mike, count me in for car pooling. Dan
