New River NC 16/88 Bridge to N.R. State Park

  • Apr 26, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Join us for an early run of the upper section of the New River from the NC16/88 bridge to the New River State Park, US-221 access.   Approximate distance 15 miles, swiftly moving water, nothing over class 1, will have to portage on 'river left' at the second bridge.   Last year this was our most popular paddle with 38 members attending.  Meet at the park at 10:00 am, we'll set up the  shuttle and drive upstream to the put-in under the bridge at the junction of NC state routes 16 and 88.  This could be a 'cold weather' paddle even in late April, so pack another set of dry clothes.  In the event of bad weather up there, like ice or snow, this event is subject to cancellation.    Mike Janeski host.

Directions:  I-77 north to exit 83 (US-21 north), follow US-21 north all the way up to Sparta (about 30 mi.).  Continue through Sparta and about two miles outside of Sparta, continue straight onto US-221 SouthDo Not turn right at the Citgo station (which is US-21).    Continue South on US-221 for 10-12 miles, cross over the New River, continue on for another mile and turn left into New River State Park

Rated 5 Stars by the Cruisers Happiness Director.

A fabulous day on the New! The large group didn't spread out too far, I got to talk with lots of friends, and everyone stayed right-side-up. I really love the New.

I kept singing Jimmy Cliff's "Wonderful World Beautiful People" all day. Thank you Mr. Janeski et al. for a wonderful day on the New.

The warmth of a Carolina blue sky, the coolness of a gently moving river and the comaraderee of a group like ours couldn't make for a better day. And to top it all off, Motley's barbeque was a sweet way to end the day along with that fantastic dessert.

Mr. Janeski I want to thank you again for putting together a great trip. Golly was the weather perfect or what! I love that section and really look forward to paddling the next section down. It was great fun seeing folks and thanks to everyone for sharing your day with me. And Andy, thanks for suggesting the Bar-B-Que. It was great too. My friends were here waiting when I got home and they were perfectly at home without me.

Hey Mike or Ray....Given the schedule and ride back, we should be back in Charlotte by 7:30PM-ish?....correct? Have tickets to Ralphie May at the Comedy Zone at 9:30.

I would think so. With the rain I would guess that the water is flowing pretty good. As long as people are good about being on time so that we can get the shuttle going.

Making a case for long pants on the river. Gayle, John, and myself are all scratching to beat the band from the poison ivy that we encountered on the tree in the river last weekend. Been treating my case with Clorox and 1% cordizone creme and bathing a couple of times a day. Any other home remedies out there?
I'll see you all at the park next Saturday morning. So far, weather here is supposed to be in high 70's so that might mean high or mid 60's on the New. Consider wearing long synthetic or waterproof pants if you don't normally wear them. Might save some discomfort should you encounter poison ivy or oak.
