  • Weather permitting, we will meet at Riverwalk to drop vehicles and shuttle to the Dam. This event is suitable for any paddler, and this is a beautiful trek.

Please check your kayak thoroughly before participating to ensure that it is in safe, working condition only (no broken seats please) and inflate sit-in kayak bladders before participating. Life jackets/pfd's will be required, and please wear closed-toe shoes, such as Keens, river shoes, or even old tennis shoes (no slick soles) for safety purposes. Bring water, snacks, gum and sunblock.

Contact Catawba River Expeditions [masked] or [masked]) to rent a kayak/gear and message Tam Minton with questions/concerns.

****In case of inclement weather or unsafe River conditions, check this Meetup site for cancellation.****

It was a good decision to cancel this trip. I went down to the access below the dam and found a sign stating the Riverwalk and RiverPark kayak launches were closed due to high water. I made a quick litter sweep to make the short drive to the dam worthwhile. See everyone at the next event and thank you Tam for your dedication to the river and for organizing these events.

if anyone wants to paddle out of Blythe Landing (Cornelius or Huntersville), I may pack supper and head out around 6:30 tonight. There's an island some of us like to paddle to and usually head back in the dark. My number is[masked]-3983. If u want to join me, feel free to text or call. Just bring the gear you would have for the cancelled paddle and a light. :)

Duke Energy is releasing water from the Dam now. I am cancelling this Meetup and will reschedule soon. I hope you will join us Sun., Jun. 23 at 7 pm for "Super Moon on Cane Creek." Thanks for your interest in this Meetup! Please contact [masked] or [masked]) me with questions.

Lots of smiles, Tam : )

I am encouraging beginner kayakers to consider not participating in this event due to River conditions today. I will schedule an upcoming Meetup soon specifically for beginners or paddlers with minimal experience to work with you on your technique/safety. Thanks for your patience today! Again, I will either cancel or host this Meetup by 4 pm today. It will be challenging to predict the River until that time, and hopefully experienced paddlers will enjoy a beautiful trip from the Dam to Riverwalk today. : )

It appears we are getting a little break from the 10k flow. Hope it holds to more "normal" rates for Thursday. Anyone have good intel?

    • Mike B.

It's been up around 9 to 10k again most of the afternoon. I'll check the gauge about noon tomorrow before I load.

The USGS Gage shows that this area has not reached 7,000 cfs this week yet; after checking with area professionals on the safety of the River in this area, I will either cancel or host this event by 4 pm Thurs. Safety is always a primary concern, and this will be cancelled if the River is unsafe Thurs. Please check this Meetup tomorrow by 4 pm.

I am meeting a couple at Love's Truckstop, which is on the corner of the Sutton Rd. exit off of I-77 Thurs. at 5.15 pm to let them follow me to the Dam; others are welcome to meet us also. My cell is[masked] if you want to leave a voicemail, and I will return your call asap Thurs.

*****Thank you for your patience as you read this; this is one of the first Meetups I've organized. Please plan to meet at the Lake Wylie Dam instead of Riverwalk Park at 5.30 pm; after we meet, we will shuttle vehicles to Riverwalk and carpool back to the Dam. I am upper 40's, brunette and very tall; I drive a gray SUV, and my green kayak will be on top of my SUV. Again, thanks for your patience with this last minute change and participation! I look forward to kayaking with you tomorrow : ) Lots of smiles, Tam : ) *****

Great! Toni, I don't know if you remember me or not, but I was the one that LOVED your noodles on top of your car as a roofrack last year at the Hwy. 9 Boat Landing Riversweep, I think : ) It will be good to see you again : )
