It's that time!! Join Dan, our new organizer, and me on our first FREE local paddle of 2014! Weather/river permitting, meet at Lake Wylie Dam to drop kayaks and shuttle vehicles to/from Riverwalk and paddle on mostly flat water and some swift water during this event; some kayaking experience is suggested due to rocky areas. The posted end time is a close guesstimate.
Please check your kayak thoroughly before participating to ensure that it is in safe, working condition only (no broken seats please) and inflate sit-in kayak airbags in advance. Life jackets/pfd's will be required and please wear closed-toe shoes, such as Keens, river shoes, or even old tennis shoes. NO SLICK SOLES PLEASE for safety purposes; if you do not have river shoes/sandals, wear old tennis shoes. Since the water temp will still be cold, please layer in clothing that is not cotton, and paddlers are encouraged to bring a change of clothes in a waterproof bag/drybag.
DNR requires that paddlers carry a whistle at all times AND A SAFETY LIGHT (headlight, flashlight secured to kayak or kayak light) for kayaking before/after sunrise/sunset. Bring kayaks/gear, water, snacks, insect repellant, hats, gum and sunblock. Contact Catawba River Expeditions [masked] or [masked]) to rent a kayak/gear, and either e-mail (via this Meetup or [masked]) with questions/concerns before Thurs., Apr. 10.
To celebrate this initial kayak trek for 2014, some may want to grab dinner as a group afterwards; we will discuss interest in sharing a meal once our shuttle is complete. THANKS TO ALL PREVIOUS CRF MEETUP FRIENDS FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION!! We hope to offer more fun opps in '14 and enjoy a GREAT kayaking season together!
****PLEASE EITHER E-MAIL (via this Meetup or [masked]) QUESTIONS/CONCERNS BEFORE THURS., APR. 10. River guides have either completed River/Swift Water Rescue Courses or are extremely experienced, solid kayakers/canoers. Also, we strive to have a safe ratio of one guide for five paddlers. Safety is our TOP PRIORITY, and river safety is checked/confirmed approximately three to four hours before these events.
In case of inclement weather/unsafe river condition, this Meetup will be cancelled by 3 pm on 4/10/14. Please check this Meetup for cancellation before traveling to Lake Wylie Dam.*****
