Edisto River Intepretive, Natural History Kayak Tour...

Highly recommended for paddlers who enjoy breathtaking, mystical rivers! Meet at Stokes Bridge (directions below) at 10 am to start our shuttle/drop kayaks/gear. We will shuttle vehicles to Givhans Ferry State Park and carpool paddlers back to Stokes Bridge. Thanks to Bob Bundy, USC-L Biology/Chemistry professor, who will highlight fascinating natural history on the Edisto River while we kayak. If you haven't experienced Bob's expertise, you are in for a treat! We will paddle for approximately five hours also fyi.

For those who enjoy camping, please feel free to secure personal camping reservations at Givhans Ferry State Park (http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/givhansferry/introduction.aspx) to enjoy even more fun and avoid the Sat. am drive to the Edisto River. Again, participants make personal camping reservations…

Please check your kayak thoroughly before participating to ensure that it is in safe, working condition only (no broken seats please) and inflate sit-in kayak airbags in advance. Life jackets/pfd's will be required and please wear closed-toe shoes, such as Keens, river shoes, or even old tennis shoes. NO SLICK SOLES PLEASE for safety purposes; if you do not have river shoes/sandals, wear old tennis shoes. Paddlers are encouraged to bring a change of clothes in a waterproof bag/drybag. DNR requires that paddlers carry a whistle at all times. Bring kayaks/gear, water, snacks, insect repellant, hats, gum and sunblock. River guides have either completed River/Swift Water Rescue Courses or are extremely experienced, solid kayakers/canoers. Also, we strive to have a safe ratio of one guide for five paddlers. Safety is our TOP PRIORITY, and river safety is checked/confirmed approximately three to four hours before these events.

Directions to Stokes Bridge: (GPS N[masked] W[masked]) - (https://maps.google.com/maps?expflags=enable_star_based_justifications:true&ie=UTF8&cid=4683772805762261386&q=Stokes+Bridge&iwloc=A&gl=US&hl=en): Access/take-out is just below the bridge. From Exit 68 on I-95 near Walterboro, drive southeast on SC 61 for 8.5 miles and turn left onto Colleton County S-15-21. The bridge is at the county line.

****PLEASE EITHER E-MAIL (via this Meetup or [masked]) QUESTIONS/CONCERNS BEFORE FRI., JUL 18. In case of inclement weather/unsafe river conditions, this Meetup will be cancelled by 6 am on 7/19/14. Please check this Meetup for cancellation before traveling to Stokes Bridge on 7/19.*****

I'm grateful to Tam, Dan and Bob for making it a great paddle. Enjoyed the pups. Thanks Lucy for saving my lunch!

Beautiful river that I want to visit again, plus a great group of people! Lots of good conversations as we paddled downriver. We got a fantastic break with temps and clouds. Thanks to Bob for an explanation of Pond vs Bald Cypress. No problem staying between lead and sweep. But I was right to worry about the camping - nights were hot, noisy till late, and too many neighbors stoked large campfires.

What a great day to be on the river and what a great river to be on. Unusually cool, cloudy day made for very comfortable paddling. Having Bob Bundy along was a wonderful asset. I appreciated his sharing. Special thanks to Dan and Lucy for leading us down this remarkable river. Best way to top off a fine day is with Dukes 'Que! After talking with the Givhans Park Ranger, we can meet at Stokes Bridge at 8.30 am instead of 8 am. If campers want to travel to Stokes Bridge in a group, please meet at the Givhans Ferry SP Office parking lot at 8.15 am Sat. I will not have Internet access after this message; Dan's cell number is posted on this Meetup in a remark, but he may not have cell reception fyi... One backup cell number that may have reception is[masked] possibly. Thanks for your participation in this Meetup and looking forward to kayaking : ) PS: The Givhans Ferry SP gate combination is 1919 if anyone arrives today to camp after 9 pm....

We'll probably at the State Park around 2PM on Friday. Might put in at the State Park and paddle upstream for an hour. Anyone would be welcome to join us. We are in site #5.

Following are directions for the takeout/put in from sctrails.net:

(GPS N[masked] W[masked]) - Stokes Bridge - Access/take-out is just below the bridge. From Exit 68 on I-95 near Walterboro, drive southeast on SC 61 for 8.5 miles and turn left onto Colleton County S-15-21. The bridge is at the county line.

Whenever we accessed this take out last year, we discovered that it is immediately before the bridge at the county line and down a dirt road. Please plan to meet at this takeout at 8 am to allow for shuttle time for this paddle. Thanks again for your participation!! : )

I have contacted Rick, the head Ranger at Givhans Ferry State Park, to inquire about river level. Rick feels that this will not be a challenge and currently has kayakers successfully kayaking in this area. I am also getting his suggestions for nearby restaurants and will share asap for Fri. dinner in case anyone is interested. I will arrive at Givhans by late Fri. afternoon, and my tent site is 25 fyi. If anyone has questions/concerns after 11 am on Fri. regarding this trip, please call/text Dan Mullane [masked]), and Dan will forward your questions/concerns to me. I will contact you via blocked cell phone number or electronically asap Fri.

As a reminder, the personality of the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation Meetups may have a different personality than other kayaking groups. Dan and Lucy or I will be the lead guide and one of us will be sweep. Please kayak in between your lead guide(s) and sweep for safety purposes. On a personal note, whenever I kayak in other groups, I try tremendously to respect my river guides requests so that our group keeps safety as a priority. Regardless of kayaker experience/skill level, it's not "if" you flip but "when" you flip. CRF organizers try diligently to provide wonderful, free kayaking opps for Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation, and thank you for your cooperation and respect to this request in advance. If you prefer to kayak in a manner other than I am requesting, please feel free to kayak solo with an outfitter in this area or enjoy this trip with another local kayaking group.

Thank you for your participation in this trip, which quite possibly be our highlighted 2014 kayaking Meetup. A very special word of thanks to Bob Bundy, USC-L professor, for interpretting the natural history of this section of the Edisto River and to Dan and Lucy for their participation and faithfulness with the CRF Meetups during 2014!

Just checked the USGS gages - river is kind of low (probably still paddle-able). Hoping for rain...

    • Andy H.

Data was from the gage at Givhans.

    • Andy H.

It'll be fine. Rain in past couple of days gave a nice cushion. Well below "normal" but plenty deep enough it seems.

  • Clare - T.

Would anyone like to stay around Saturday night after the Edisto trip, and do another section on Sunday? Maybe farther upstream?

    1 · April 16

    • Larry C.

Any more talk of Sunday paddle?

      July 15

    • Clare - T.

Yes, Larry, we have a good group wanting to stay and paddle on Sunday. Exact location TBD. I'll check one or two spots on the North Fork on my way down Friday to see if there's enough water. Alternates are on the main stem. I'll bring along my maps and we can discuss Saturday after our paddle/before dinner. Suggestions welcome!

      July 15

  • Ray C.

I will be heading down early Friday. I am in site #17. Would love to join the group at Dukes on Saturday night. Will be great to get back on this river again. It has been too long.

Can you say more about the paddle itself & the river? How long a paddle will it be in hours & miles? Are the pictures shown of this particular stretch of river? sounds intriguing, but need more info to make my decision... thanks!

    March 24

    • Tam

Thank you, Ray! : ) You know how much I respect your expertise, and I am so excited to kayak with you again : ) Our tentsite is 25, and if we can get three tents on this site, please join us : ) Looking forward to kayaking with you, my friend : )

Thanks again for all participation on this event....if you can swing this, Dan and I will be volunteering at the CRF Triple C Brewery fundraiser tonight as a BOUNCER : ) This should be quite hilarious, and it will be a great time to meet some of our group hopefully and new friends...please come out and support CRF, which desperately needs our support. 6 p to 9 p, and I have created a Meetup with the Triple C Brewery Fundraiser and address on the CRF Meetup....Hope to see you there, and please bring your friends : )

I am extremely excited that this event has such wonderful participation and interest! Our cap is being reached quickly. If this kayak trip reaches the alotted RSVP's, please e-mail me: 1. to be on a Waiting List in case of a cancellation; and/or 2. express interest in an additional Edisto trip possibly later this year. We are planning more beautiful, non-local kayak trips this year, and if we have enough interest, we can sub this trip again in '14 instead of a river that we are planning to host. I hope this '14 CRF Meetup calendar year will be one of the best ever! Thanks for all participation!! : ) : ) : )

Hello all! I have mentioned to Tam that I think 10AM is a little late as we will still have to shuttle which will probably take until near 11. If people are going to drive down that morning 10 may be better, just curious as to what others may think...
