Mt. Mitchell & Blue Ridge Parkway Scenic Ride

Join us on a 180 mile fall color ride to Mt. Mitchell with a stop at secluded Roaring Fork Falls after a hearty breakfast buffet at AJ's Family Steakhouse. Come early because it's kick stands up a 9 AM and a ride up the mountain at your own pace. We will meet up just off 183 and get on the BRP for a short cut to Hwy. 221 and 3 mile road. There are several gas stops possible along the 120 miles to Roaring Fork, Mt. Mitchell and Spruce Pine (lunch at the Mountain View Restaurant). From there it is 60 miles of overlook views to Lenoir and the end of the ride.

You may want to bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes for the waterfall (a half mile easy walk) and Mt. Mitchell.

The date can be changed to accommodate fall color and weather.

Ride safe,

Joe

Thanks for leading us on an awesome ride Joe. It was nice riding with Troy and Gina. Had a great ride with Ray and Darlene, Monty, Joe, Kenny, Kevin, David, and Keith. Hope I didn't leave anyone out. I missed Linda, maybe next time. It was an awesome ride and nice weather. I've never been to Mt. Mitchell. Thanks again Joe.

Debra, I have new-comers disease .... I hated that I couldn't join you for this ride. I looked at all your pictures when you put them up. They look great and it looked like a fabulous ride and everyone had a great time! Looking forward to the next ride, Heather

Joe no worries you did a great ride. I need to get over my own fear of gravel and practice riding on it. Thankfully the road was clear and I wobbled my way out of it without landing flat on the ground!

Masterfully led ride today by "wrong way Joe".. Beautiful ride up to the waterfalls through rodes which exemplify the beauty of the Blue Ridge within NC, followed by lunch in Little Switzerland and a scenic ride to the big hill! Debra got some great shots from the summit! (or she could have) i dunno.. Squirt reconnected with Peanut. 'nuf said. Saw some off-roadin' - way cool..

The lights were on as we rode home...

    Thanks again Joe!

Monty - Glad you enjoy the ride and thank you for your support on my first time as leader. I learned many things from this ride and one is to really think about where I want to go before getting on the Parkway.

Thanks Joe for a good ride. I had never been to Mt Mitchell. Even had a mini family reunion on the ride. Small world.

Well, I went to the wrong AJs. I am at the one in Lenoir. I was wondering why nobody was here.

Sorry, folks, I am going to have to opt out of the ride today. I am just not up to riding an hour and a half to and from Morganton and then the ride. Darn! Really wanted to do this one. Have a great day! Heather

My wife and I decided to go to Grandfather Mountain today. After reading Heather's comment I wasn't expecting to see much fall color. I was say the color is almost at 50% and the peak may be next weekend depending on the weather. The advantage of riding this weekend is the weather will be great and fewer cars to deal with on the Parkway.
Will if you get a late start , give me a call at[masked] and leave me a message you are coming. We will stop at the Brown Mountains overlook to see if there is any fog we have to contend with and if you are on your way.

Nice photo op at the Brown Mountain overlook.. A little mist in the valley may look nice.. You're right about this being a good weekend to do this ride for many reasons.. We're looking forward to seeing the change happen over the next several weekends from several different views.. Once a year!

Was on the BRP today. Leaves not really turning yet .... Think it will be a few weeks. Don't want to discourage anybody for going on the ride but also don't want disappointed expectations if fall colors are your main purpose in riding this weekend!

    Hi Everyone,
Looks like the Blue Ridge Parkway is not going to close during the government shutdown (for now) and the rain is going to hold off until Sunday or Monday so I hope everyone will come out for this ride The only change so far is the Mountain View Restaurant is a little pricey for lunch ($8 for a hamburger) so I've moved our lunch to Bama-Que which is conveniently located on the way back from our gas stop. The food is good and we can sit outside or inside.
    See you Saturday!
    Joe

I know I have been a silent member since August. So sorry for that. You guys have some great rides, but after mapquesting from Yadkinville I find it to be like 85 miles for me to get to AJ's. Maybe on one of these rides I can just pick up with you somewhere along the way. Look forward to meeting you all sometime.

    August 14, 2013

    • Joe P.

Monty, I think the ride will be great and hope the weather will be nice for sitting outside at the restaurant. I'll have their phone number so we can call ahead for group reservations. We can try anyway.
