A group of friendly acoustic musicians meets once a month to play Bluegrass, Old Time, Irish, Western Swing, and Catskills square dance tunes in a low-key, non-competitive atmosphere. You can pick up standard tunes across genres, become more proficient on a 2nd or 3rd instrument or improve your improvisational skills; all at a slower pace. For advanced beginners to intermediate and professional players. Come play music and have fun with other musicians without the pressure of performing for an audience!
I was inspired to start this slow jam by Sue Batkin, the organizer of the NYC Bluegrass Slow Jam that meets every other week at Paddy Reilly's in Manhattan and who's celebrating over 100 sessions! Here's what she writes: "Once the pickers come out of the closet and enter the world of the jam they are amazed at how much better their playing gets. People are also surprised to learn that the skills needed for jamming are really different from those used in the closet -- or up on stage. You gotta think on your feet, learn to hear your chord changes, learn to improvise, learn how to lead." And, I will add, really learn how to listen to the other players and allow them to shine!
We're so pleased that Ann Epner of the Pine Hill Community Center has offered to host our ongoing Catskill Mountains Acoustic Slow Jams which take place on the 2nd Friday of every month at 6:00.
