Raven Cliff Falls Hike & Oktoberfest Party in Helen with Outside Atlanta

Join us for a great hike to the waterfall on Raven Cliff Falls Trail and lunch overlooking the Falls, then on to Helen for Oktoberfest. Outside Atlanta, led by Ron Hilston, and Celebrate Atlanta will combine for a joint hike and Oktoberfest Party in Helen following the hike.

Celebrate Atlanta and Outside Atlanta members who want to carpool can meet at MARTA's Mansell Park & Ride (2255 Mansell Rd, Alpharetta, GA 30022, Exit 8 on 400) at 9 AM, to carpool to Raven Cliff Falls Trailhead. We will meet at Raven Cliff Falls Trailhead at 11 AM for the hike to Raven Cliff Falls. Once at the Falls, we will eat lunch before returning to our cars. The hike is approximately 2.5 miles out to the Falls, and then back for a total of 5 miles.

From the trailhead, it is a short ride into Helen (but expect traffic as you approach downtown Helen). We will leave Raven Cliff Falls Trailhead and drive into the north end of Helen, 1 mile away, to attend Helen's OktoberFest Party at Festhalle ($9 cover) for a “Live” German Drinking & Dancing Hall Band experience. Oktoberfest begins at 1 PM and goes through midnight. Besides the official Oktoberfest at FestHalle, most places in Helen will be celebrating Oktobefest with live music, plenty of beer and food and about as eclectic a crowd as you can find in Georgia.

So join us as Celebrate Atlanta and Outside Atlanta combine for a great outdoor hike to the beautiful Raven Cliff Falls, and then let's party "Helen Style" at Oktoberfest!

Season: Year-round, however, spring and fall are best for flowers and leaf colors. Water flow in Dodd Creek is best in spring.

Criss-crossing Dodd Creek, the Raven Cliff Trail treks along a gentle 5-mile out-and-back that accesses one of Georgia’s hidden trail treasures. Start hiking west from the trailhead through a hemlock forest, crossing over Dodd Creek. In the summer time the banks of the creek are lined with white-blooming mountain laurel. Continue hiking past numerous streamside campsites, algae-plastered boulders, and stretches of small white-water cascades. Rhododendron, trout lily, and dog hubble shrub line the trail as it meanders along the creek toward its final destination: Raven Cliff Falls. This three-tiered set of cascades rushes through massive granite fissures before settling in a deep, dark pool. A broad table-top rock above the falls offers a serene and introspective lunch spot before trekking back down the creek to the trail head.

I could not find any other way to let you know that I am cancelling on coming this Saturday to the hike and Oktoberfest. Sorry! But that does give you one more spot open.

Carpools are a great idea whether you carpool from Mansell or elsewhere. Suffice it to say, match up with people who have the same plans. If you are going to Oktoberfest after the hike, do not car pool with someone who is not attending Oktoberfest. This should be obvious but you never know.

Is it ok to bring dogs on the hike?

For those of you on the East side of town, it would be much easier for us to leave from the Indian Trail Park & Ride than go all the way around to Mansell. I can take 3 riders if anyone is interested. I will be there @ 8:30, plan to leave @ 9. We will get there the same time as the Mansell people.
