Is economic growth violating the limits of a finite planet or the only way to social progress? Can the limits to growth be overcome or should we instead aim for prosperity without growth? Are these questions for politics or for grassroots lifestyle choices?
In this session, we won't find all the answers, but we'll try to understand some of the different perspectives on this. To start off, we'll have an online call with Erik Assadourian of the World Watch Institute. Erik has written about Degrowing our Way to Genuine Progress and argues against further growth in rich countries. Nils will give a counter-argument in favor of growth. Then, we'll discuss among ourselves.
Let's try to get some clarity on this complex subject by discussing where the different sides to the argument are coming from. Without getting too technical, we might want to look at questions like these:
• What do we mean by economic growth?
• How can it benefit and/or harm society and the environment?
• How can democratic societies have sustainable prosperity with or without growth? Which tough choices have to be made?
• What does this have to do with our everyday lives?
We'll meet in the separate club room that is reserved for us in the back of the restaurant. Pass by the rest rooms and you'll find the door to the club room. The club room is on the same level as the rest of the restaurant - don't take the stairs down to the music room.
