About The New York City Celiac Disease Meetup Group

We are a group of people with Celiac Disease or gluten-intolerant who enjoy sharing information about Celiac Disease, eating gluten-free food, and getting to know others with Celiac Disease. We can all relate to each other's sagas of being misdiagnosed and sick for many years and our meetups are a great time to get together and share stories and gluten-free tips.

Celiac disease is a digestive condition triggered by consumption of the protein gluten, which is found in bread, pasta, cookies, pizza crust and many other foods containing wheat, barley or rye. Oats may contain gluten as well. When a person with celiac disease eats foods containing gluten, an immune reaction occurs in the small intestine, resulting in damage to the surface of the small intestine and an inability to absorb certain nutrients from food.

We are very lucky to be in a city as accommodating to the gluten-free diet as New York City has become in recent years. Our Meetup group has twice-monthly events at different venues around New York City. Past Meetup events and specials for our group include: gluten-free dinners, happy hours with gluten-free beer, food and product focus groups, gluten-free cooking sprees, vendor fairs, gluten-free discounts, lectures, and much more.

We have a very active message board where you are free to share information with our group. We welcome all suggestions, questions, and comments. Please see the link below for more information.
