CAKEWRECKS When professional cakes go horribly, hilariously wrong Cakewrecks.com is a hilarious blog that's become a book now & it has a huge following. Next Tuesday at the Barnes and Nobles on 8th Street the authors will be signing their new books. As a special treat to those of us who usually cannot eat cake, Cathy Olate and Josh Whitney of Jacy Cakes LLC will be providing us with gluten-free cake after the signing! Cathy and Josh are big fans of Cakewrecks so they offered up a cake to the authors and convinced them that since they already have someone bringing a regular cake Jacy Cakes LLC could make a cake gluten free for anyone that might be a fan of the site, but cant take part in eating the cakes there because of Celiac disease. Come early, the gluten-free cake only feeds 100! Barnes & Noble 396 Ave of the Americas at 8th Str. New York, NY 10011

Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University Celiac Disease is an incurable autoimmune disorder characterized by intolerance to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. This intolerance damages the small intestine causing malabsorption of nutrients. In children, symptoms of the disease may include gastrointestinal problems, failure to thrive, tooth discoloration, short stature or developmental delays. In adults, untreated Celiac Disease may be associated with anemia, osteoporosis, thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis or infertility as well as Type 1 diabetes and certain cancers. The only known treatment for the disease is strict removal of gluten from the diet. The variety of symptoms combined with a general lack of awareness of the disease often leads to misdiagnosis or no diagnosis. Yet, celiac disease is actually relatively common. An estimated 3 million Americans have Celiac Disease (it is more prevalent than Inflammatory Bowel Disease or Multiple Sclerosis), yet 97% of cases are undiagnosed, leaving millions at risk. The Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University Medical Center was established within the Department of Medicine at Columbia University in 2001 under the guidance of Peter Green, MD, one of a few recognized experts on celiac disease in the United States. The Center’s mission is to redefine the future of celiac disease and treatment through continuing advances in patient care, research, education and patient advocacy. The Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University Medical Center is one of a few centers in the United States that provides comprehensive medical care, including nutritional counseling, for adult and pediatric patients with celiac disease. All of the Center’s research is directed toward celiac disease clinical, epidemiology, and mechanisms of pathogenesis of celiac disease and patient and physician education. The Center is diagnosing and treating more than 2800 patients annually from around the world. For additional information, please visit us online at www.celiacdiseasecen ter.org

At the beginning of August, we lost a very important part of our Celiac Community. David Marc Fischer, author of Gluten-Free NYC and active member of The New York City Celiac Disease Meetup Group since 2004 (DavidF on our message boards), passed away from a very sudden and aggressive form of leukemia. David will be greatly missed, and remembered for his friendliness, intelligence, and sincere contributions to the celiac community. We would like to honor David with a memorial dinner at one of David’s favorite GFRAP restaurants, Lilli & Loo. For those of you that were friends with David, you will remember that David was a big supporter of GFRAP and usually only dined at a restaurant in their program to ensure a safe, gluten-free meal. You can see two of his Lilli and Loo blog postings here: http://glutenfreenyc .blogspot.com/search ?q=lilli Please note, although this is a meetup dinner we are gathering to remember David as his friends, fans, and family. There will be an opportunity for you all to share thoughts about David during the meal as well as make a donation in his honor to the Celiac Disease Center. I am also collecting blog postings, quotes, and general comments about David Marc Fischer to be shared on the night of the memorial dinner. If you have anything you would like added to this collection, please email me directly. For those of you who cannot make the dinner, you can donate online in David’s honor at https://giving.colum bia.edu/giveonline/ Use the "Select a School or Division" drop down box, and select Celiac Disease Center. You will be able to specify on the next page that the gift is in memory of David Marc Fischer, and a note will be sent to the family. Come Celebrate L’annam becoming a GFRAP Participant! Yes, L’annam is officially a GFRAP participating restaurant and we want to celebrate the news. The first Meet-Up at L’annam was well attended and received great reviews of a wonderful time and food. L’annam offers flavorful food and reasonable prices, the same as the prices on their regular menu and when do we ever see that. It is a fun, lively place in the middle of the trendy Union Square scene. The staff is very friendly and supportive to those with gluten or other dietary needs. It is interesting to note that much of the Vietnamese cuisine is already gluten/wheat free. Soy sauce is the main culprit but that is easy to eliminate and still have a very extensive menu, five full pages to be exact (see the files section to review the menu). The few dishes that were eliminated were dumplings, egg noodles, those marinated in soy and/or fried. As is the case with most Asian cooking, the existing practices in the kitchen at L’annam make cross-contamination easier to address. For example most meals are cooked in a wok where high heat is used and the wok and utensil is washed after every meal since residual from the prior meal would burn as I have personally witnessed in L'annam's kitchen. The dumpling are steamed in individual baskets and brought to the table, then washed after using. Rice and mung bean noodles are soaked in separate containers over night and never come into contact with the cooking of wheat based noodles which is done per order. Wheat products are not on countertops or other food prep areas in any real way since so few are used. So fortunately there appears to be little potential for cross-contamination. So come support this new GFRAP restaurant and enjoy the countless tasty GF dishes!

We are lucky to have a bunch of very talented people in our Meetup group. Our first showcase of one of our own talented Celiacs will be at Arlene’s Grocery on July 22 when rock band Devi, featuring NYC Celiac Disease group member Deb, performs live! Arlene’s Grocery will have gluten-free drink specials throughout the show and you can purchase CDs from Deb for only $8 (regularly priced $10). Come out and support a fellow Celiac at a fun and new kind of meetup event for our group! Date: July 22 Time: 8 PM Location: Arlene's Grocery, 95 Stanton street (b/w Ludlow and Oorchard) http://www.arlenesgr ocery.net/ Cover : $8, 21+ URL: www.devi-rock.com More about Devi: DEVI (pronounced "Davey")is a rock power trio from Hoboken NJ, led by a woman Lucid Culture calls "one of the great guitar players of our time." This is "an utterly bad-ass power trio," says Midwest Record, with "a sense of humor, swagger, blistering guitar chops, looks, and the smarts to fuse niche with mass market." Italy's Audiovideofoto magazine adds "something tells us we are witnessing the birth of a rock star." DEVI got its start when Debra saw John Hummel playing drums in a tiny Hoboken NJ bar. John is an in-demand drummer who has made albums with Amfibian (Phish lyricist Tom Marshall's band), Black Market Radio and C.C. Coletti. When early Devi bassist Dan Grennes was hired to perform in Toxic Avenger: The Musical, John and Deb brought in bassist Keith Mannino, who had played with John in Black Market Radio, the popular heavy rock band led by Peter Cornell (Chris Cornell's brother). DEVI's debut album, Get Free, bursts out of the gate with the powerpop gem "Another Day" and closes with a hypnotic jam cover of "The Needle and the Damage Done." Live, the band "jams with joy and abandon. If adrenaline, crescendos, and heart-wrenchingly beautiful playing are something you would enjoy, get your ass down there." (Lucid Culture) DEVI roped some talented friends into the Get Free sessions, including keyboardist Rob Clores (Black Crowes, Blues Traveler), jazz clarinetist Perry Robinson, sarod player & singer Wynne Paris (Krishna Das), Michael W. Dean (Bomb), Wiser Time vocalist Carmen Sclafani and producer Anthony Krizan. Redeye USA is distributing Get Free digitally; the CD is available on CD Baby and Amazon. Deb endorses DR Strings and Daisy Rock Guitars. "Get Free is about the longing for love and the longing for God, and the crazy things we pursue-from sex to drugs to relationships-to try to appease those longings," says Debra, a long-time yoga practitioner. "All our efforts to escape from being human help us evolve," she adds, laughing, "whether we like it or not!" http://www.devi-rock .com/
