AMSTON / COLCHESTER AIRLINE TRAIL HIKE
Hello and welcome to all you pre summer hikers. Time to get out and get moving as this summer slowly ramps up.
This will be approximately a 2 hr hike starting from Rt 85 in Amston thru the woods on an asphalt/gravel laiden trail. The first leg of the journey will have us passing between a marsh (but on a trail) where we might get to see some interesting birds both flying and wading in the water. There will also be butterflies and flying grasshoppers along the sides of the trail. From there we’ll cross the street to the second leg of our journey where the high arching tree canopy will make it look cathedral like thru a more wooded landscape (but still on the trail). Then we’ll progress to the third and final leg where we will take a journey off the trail and along side one of the waterways. Here we’ll be totally enveloped by nature. If the group insists we can continue to the very end of this trail which could be an extra 45 mins or we can turn around and head back.
We should all meet up at the Amston parking lot located on Rt 85. The lot is to the right of Rt 85 Lumber. For those with a GPS it’s either before or after Route 85 lumber depending on what direction you’re coming from. Route 85 Lumber is at:
522 Church St, Amston, CT 06231 .
And look to arrive at the parking lot at 10:30am. We will be starting the hike promptly at 10:45am.
Dogs are welcomed on leash and may go off leash when we go off trail. This is a family oriented trail as many families either walk or ride bikes on it during the weekend, so come one, come all. But as is true for any hike you go at your own risk.
Because we’re walking by a swamp make sure you bring bug spray, and during the first leg of the hike the sun will be bearing down on us so wear sunscreen and / or a hat. And of course always bring water / fluids for the journey.
As an added bonus bring a cooler full of something light to eat and we can take a short ride to Salem Valley Ice Cream to have something to eat and then enjoy their famous ice cream treats! Here’s their website:
http://salemvalleyfarmsicecream.com/hours.htm . They do have picnic tables there but bring a lounge chair in case we can’t all sit near each other via the tables.
If anyone has any questions or gets lost feel free to call me, Bryan, on my cell at[masked] 7026.
Looking forward to seeing all of you on the trail!!!
