"PUBLIC OPTION NOW" VIGIL TONIGHT AT LAKE EOLA Sponsored by MoveOn, Democracy for America and True Majority Given that DFA is one of the sponsors of tonight's Public Option Now Vigil and time is of the essence on the health insurance reform debate, we will dispense with a formal meeting tonight and join the vigil. I have been asked to tell my friend's story, and I know Steve Barnes is speaking, too, so others of you may also be telling your stories. In any event, I hope that as many of you as possible can come to Lake Eola. They are meeting on the Rosalind Avenue side of the park. I was told the corner of Robinson and Rosalind; however, having done events there before, I suspect that it will gravitate toward the bandshell and the broad walkway entrance to the park at the foot of Washington St. We have been asked to bring a candle or flashlight, and umbrellas were also recommended if the weather is inclement. The Organizers sent the following instructions: Our vigil will be simple and dignified. We'll gather at 7:30 PM (local time) on Wednesday, September 2nd. We will share stories and names of people who are suffering under our current broken health care system. We'll put a human face on the urgent need for bold health care reform that includes a real public health insurance option. With our actions, we'll deliver an unmistakable message to the media and members of Congress: We can't afford to wait. This is not a rally or a place for speeches or announcements. This is simply a moment to stand with the thousands of people who lose their health care coverage every day and millions more who struggle with the unbearable cost of health care. This principle is important. We ask that you only attend the event if you agree to abide by it.

Agenda - TBA The following items are continuing initiatives and updates will be given. Legislative Update: Public Option - Healthcare Initiative: Continuing actions we can take to help ensure that whatever Healthcare Plan is passed by Congrees contains, at a minimum, a public option and is not simply rearranging the blocks of the existing mess of employer-based private insurance. There has been a great deal of backsliding by some members of Congress in recent weeks. Most of us understand that Single Payer would be ideal but at this stage we cannot even count on some of our Democrats to vote for a public option (i.e., the ability to opt-in to affordable coverage similar to Medicare, or what our elected representatives and employees have. Redistricting Petition Drive: Update on Fair Distrcts Florida plans to get the Redistricting Standards Petitions on the ballot! Bring in your signed petitions; sign the petitions if you haven't yet done so; pick up Petitions; and get your friends, family and co-workers to sign. It's easy and so very important. If you need motivation, look no further than the effort to ram a truly dreadful Elections Law Bill through the legislature this session. Meeting Location & Directions--Location May Change--Please Watch for Notice: We will be meeting at the Orange County Democratic Party Headquarters, 47 E. Robinson St., Suite 201, Orlando, FL 32801. The office is located in the two-story, reddish-brick colored building on Robinson St. across from St. James Diocese and the downtown Post Office. It is the same building as the FedEx/Kinko's on the corner of Robinson & Magnolia. The office is on the second floor (there is a small elevator). Parking and access (through double glass door in center of ground floor) is at the rear of the building. Turn north on Magnolia as though you were driving straight into the County Courthouse. Magnolia deadends and loops around going back south. Turn right into the parking lot behind the building just before you get back to Robinson. Parking is free at night. Look for the double glass doors. When you enter go down the hall, turn right, then left and use either the stairs or the elevator. Looking for new Meeting Locations: We were back at the Orlando Public Library for the February meeting. Now parking is a more serious problem than ever as the fees have gone up. Stardust is not available to us on our meeting night and the parking is tight. We've also checked out Dandelion Communitea, but there are several problems such as parking (even worse than Stardust), tiny rooms, and no reservation of a room, as they have had some bad experiences. We would very much like to meet at an establishment which serves reasonably priced food, beer and wine. However, we need a room to ourselves for speakers and films, an establishment which has progressive management/ownership , and ample surface parking. Experience has taught us that we do best on the north side of downtown. It is also helpful for our attendance to have easy access to I-4. If you have any suggestions, please email the organizer and we'll check it out.
