  • Ft Desoto Park

  • For those camping at Ft Desoto park, a visit to Egmont Key is a must. While most have to wait for the Ferry, we can go over any time we like.

Egmont Key has some of the best intact structures where the old fort guarded Tampa Bay, and the beaches are in a word, spectacular. There are also hiking trails and other nature sites to visit.

Lets meet at the Gulf Pier and Kayak across the Channel to the Island. We can circumnavigate it, as there are real neat ruins in the water on the other side of the Island.

Location: There are two (2) piers, the bay pier and the gulf pier. The Gulf Pier is easiest to unload, and the closest launch point to the island. It is also located near the Ft Desoto Fort structure. If you have any questions, come see me or Sheri at the campsite.

This will be an open water crossing, so we will evaluate the weather once we arrive at Ft Desoto. Know your capabilities and kayak before venturing out into Tampa Bay.

Necessary: Bring everything you will need for a day trip on the water. You are required to have a PFD on board your vessel and whistle. Bring enough water, and hydrate before you hit the water. Additional items to bring would include bug spray, sun block, towels, snacks etc.

I would love to do a paddle on Friday. Will anyone one be there early enough to explore?

I live in St Pete so though the camping is sold out, I'd like to join in for the day, kayaking & potluck at the sites later, hope that is okay? I don't have a kayak & know they do rentals, but I don't think from the pier..anyone know? I can certainly inquire if that is helpful...or do any members ever bring an extra for loaning? I take good care of stuff :) Thanks! This group looks really active & like it does a lot of fun trips, looking forward to meeting folks!

I will need to rent a kayak, if possible.

The site requires an address, so I put the address of Ft Desoto. The Gulf Pier is in the park, near the fort which is right by the North Beach.
