HIKE BASICS

Kickoff: Saturday November 23, 2013, 9 AM, Port Mayaca Recreation Area
(north side of the St. Lucie Canal / Port Mayaca Lock along US 441, Port Mayaca)
Direction: Counterclockwise
Campgrounds: FTA will obtain group camping at two campgrounds, one in Okeechobee and the other in Clewiston.

Okeechobee KOA, a long-time favorite thanks to its central location (and pools and hot tub) will be our base camp from November 22-29. This is one of KOA's largest campgrounds with a heavy RV focus, centered around a golf course with a tiki bar overlooking the greens. Our group rate is $30 per site, with two tents or one camper/RV on a site. The Wagonmaster will arrive to check in campers after noon on Friday November 22.

Clewiston KOA, located just north of Clewiston, will keep us close to the open sections of the trail between November 29-December 1. Our group rate is $22 per site for two tents or one camper, $33 for RV sites. This is an older, more traditional campground with a heated pool, wifi, and laundry room.

As in prior years, all campsite assignments and payments will be made through our Wagonmaster, who will match tent campers up with partners to split costs. Please bring CASH or CHECK, no credit cards will be accepted.

Do not contact the campgrounds directly for reservations unless you plan to use one of their cabins: both locations have KOA Kabins, Kottages and Lodges, which you can reserve through their front office.

I would recommend using the above url's to contact wagon master for reservations.

Ending: Sunday December 1, 2013, likely at John Stretch Park or Uncle Joe's Fish Camp.

At the kickoff, the Wimp Walk will be held on the Rafael Sanchez Trail with the assistance of the Tropical Trekkers Chapter.

From the Facebook site - 22nd annual Big O Hike, it looks like they prefer everyone sign up on their Meetup site - Florida Trail Association-Loxahatchee Chapter-PBC . The Wagonmaster assigns camp sites upon arrival. I was concerned about getting a camper site so I have posted a question on their Meetup site.

Yes this is correct, I have posted somewhere in all this gobbledy gook to sign up at both sites. There are instructions to get a camper site somewhere in all the reams of information they have sent - see links above and go to there facebook page and contact Sandra Friend for any further information. For those tent campers we will show up and be assigned a site.

Sheri, would love to join you further up the trail. I haven't hiked that section either. Keep safe up there in the Alaskan bush!

I am on a mailing list and have already received two emails from the hike organizers. Not sure how I got on the list...might be FTA related. Will try to post email content or links under "Discussions."

yup this is an annual FTA event - just wanted to be sure our members are aware of whats going on. If you would like to post anything on here or start a discussion box with any new information that would be great. I will be in Kotzebue working and no phone reception and sketchy internet for 6 weeks

It's over thanksgiving, but you don't have to do the entire hike - jump in whenever and leave whenever. Just wanted to get everyone thinking toward this hike and a great way for me to get this trail finished!!
