Overview

River Forest is a shaded group camping facility on the shores of the St. Johns River in Ocala National Forest. Located just across the river from Deland, the site is popular for groups, family reunions and weddings and can accommodate up to 125 guests.

Natural Features:

The Ocala National Forest spans four counties and 383,000 acres. It is the southernmost and oldest national forest east of the Mississippi River and protects the world's largest contiguous sand pine scrub forest.
The campground is shaded with large live oaks with a flat, grassy patch of land that leads to the St. Johns River.

Recreation:

This site is a great setting for groups to relax, picnic and enjoy the shade on a warm day. A large field offers ample space for activities such as softball, volleyball and horseshoe tossing.
Visitors wanting to venture out of the picnic area can go for a long walk through floodplain forests and pine flatwoods on the St. Francis Trail, or head to the river to canoe, kayak or fish for bass.

Facilities:

All new facilities are the highlight of the River Forest Group Site. Facilities include a screened pavilion for food preparation and cooking with your own cook stoves. A new bathhouse has also been built on site.

The camping area is flat for tents with some shade provided by trees. While RVs are welcome, there are no hookups and all vehicles must remain in the designated parking area. Grills and picnic tables are provided.

Sam and all his organizers outdid themselves on the venue, activities and the party. Thank you also for the new high-tech toy. My first new year's resolution is to organize at least two trips with this great group.

Will each day's paddle and the pontoon ride occur more or less simultaneously, I mean, are they "either/or" options or will we be able to do both each day? (I assume Carl is a safe boater and that there's a # limitation on the pontoon..on second thought maybe I shouldn't assume anything about Carl ;-)

I checked the weather forecast and it seems to have changed considerably since I first checked....There's a 90% chance of rain for Sunday (76 high, 55 low). Monday, 20% chance of rain, 72 high, 49 low. Tuesday 0% of rain 65 high, 43 low. Wednesday 10% chance of rain, 70 high, 50 low. Of course, it doesn't mean that if it rains it will rain 100% of the time and I'm sure we'll make the best of it even if we just hang out in the pavilion and have some laughs but bring your rain gear and some warm clothes.

Hey Sam. Any one interested in doing a "Chinese Christmas" on New Year's Eve?? Anyone wanting to participate, brings a wrapped gift $10 or $20 value . You decided. Put participants name in hat to draw names for gift, You keep the gift you opened or take someone else's gift that has been opened. This could be a lot of fun with this amount of people.

New for horseback riding. I checked on the grooming part and they said we could pass on the grooming. We just all need to pick a day. Someone said they could only make it on the 31st or 1st. The time can be from 11 to one. I've checked the weather and the 31st is going to be cooler. My thought is do it on the 1st. We can get up pack up. Hang out and leave by 12:30. Get to the stables and ride for and hour then head home. I am open to any other suggestions. Please add yeh or ney or other options. We need to schedule soon to get the day and time that we want.
