Two Day Glamping Paddle and Camp - Ray's Wayside to Eureka

  • Jan 10, 2014 · 5:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Because of the large number of paddlers, we will be sending 1/2 of the group paddling from Ray's Landing to Gores and 1/2 of the group from Gores to Eureca on Saturday. On Sunday we will switch. There should be room for all of us to camp at Gores.

This will be a "Glamping" paddle (ie bathrooms and cold showers). We will set up a base camp at Gores Landing and paddle the Ocklawaha River from Rays Landing to Gores (Saturday) and from Gores to Eureka West (Sunday). I plan to arrive late Friday to set up the base camp. Participants are welcome to camp both nights, one night only or not at all.

Saturday night will be a potluck dinner night. Everyone contributes and everyone shares. Please note in the comment section below what you will contribute.

The Ocklawaha is said to be a very old river geologically, and as a result has created a mile-wide valley. It has a sand bottom and its waters tend to be very clear with occasional areas where tannin from the swamps colors the water a darker hue.

Gores Landing have campsites on a first-come,first-served basis; we will share sites to fit everyone; small pup tents are advised or share large tent - whatever works and people are comfortable with. There are bathrooms with outdoor showers. There are a total of 12 campsites at Gores, hopefully there will be sites available to us.

EVERYONE IS INVITED FOR SINGLE DAY TRIP and/or to hang out for food/drink at campsite on Friday or Saturday evening, or camp at other locations.

Pets are prohibited at all Marion County Parks.

Everyone on the water is required by law to have a PFD and a whistle.

Rental kayaks are available. Let me know if you need to rent one.

WEATHER CHECK ZIP CODE: 32134

Fruit salad or I can donate to the meat section. I am just not very good at cooking the meat on the grill. So if someone wants to cook it I don't mind contributing. I guess that is 1/2 a pot luck :)

Count me in for both days camping.

I would love to paddle the silver river one of the days if there is a group going to see the monkeys. I don't mind the up and back, it is good exercise.

for the pot luck, I am planning on making a sausage, pepper, onion and garlic dish. I am bringing a coleman stove to cook it on. I have one spare burner if someone needs it.

I am so glad I decided to brave the crowds and camp at Gore's Landing. It was wonderful to connect faces to comments and reconnect with camper/paddlers who I hadn't seen in a long time. I missed you! The weather whittled our group to 20 or so and we enjoyed wonderful times around the campfires and fabulous food. The shuttles go off without a hitch because of the cooperative attitude of the SLACKERS. Great photographs, too!

For those wanting to go all the way from Rays to Eureka on Saturday, please look me up Saturday morning so we can discuss logistics. I looks as if there might be 6 people interested in the long trip. I will be arriving at the campground about midnight Friday.

Heres an estimate of what we need for 60 slackers, over two mornings: Based on experience from Oct 25 event at Gores.

Eggs for Scrambling and French toast: 18 dozen
Bread: 6 loaves - Publix Five Grain Italian or sourdough works best.
Bacon: Premake several packs, plus 8 more packs
    Sausage
    Pancakes: Have
    Syrup: Have
Creamer and Sugar: Have - Need Sweet n Low

Cups for Coffee - Please DO NOT fill your 48 oz big gulp mugs with coffee from the Urn - We need to have enough for the group.

Paper Plates - all for Pot luck Sat night as well.
    Utensils

Did I forget anything? Please review and add if needed.

Sam, I planned on getting to the camp site Friday afternoon as I do not want to pitch a tent in the dark. If I get there before you, is there anything I should know or is there anything I can do?

    January 9, 2014

    • Sam G.

No / Just get set up and wait for everyone else

      January 9, 2014

Thank Eric. We'll have at least four camp stoves. Too bad the fuel tree has only two out lets for propane. Not sure about the Water Coffee Cooler. I'm bringing an extra coffee carafe, and I want to get a few percolators going in addition to the big Urn. If anyone has an extra carafe, please bring.
