Two Day Glamping Paddle and Camp - Ray's Wayside to Eureka

  • Apr 11, 2014 · 5:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Because of the large number of paddlers, we will be sending 1/2 of the group paddling from Ray's Landing to Gores and 1/2 of the group from Gores to Eureca on Saturday. On Sunday we will switch. There should be room for all of us to camp at Gores.

This will be a "Glamping" paddle (ie bathrooms and cold showers). We will set up a base camp at Gores Landing and paddle the Ocklawaha River from Rays Landing to Gores (Saturday) and from Gores to Eureka West (Sunday). I plan to arrive late Friday to set up the base camp. Participants are welcome to camp both nights, one night only or not at all.

Saturday night will be a potluck dinner night. Everyone contributes and everyone shares. Please note in the comment section below what you will contribute.

The Ocklawaha is said to be a very old river geologically, and as a result has created a mile-wide valley. It has a sand bottom and its waters tend to be very clear with occasional areas where tannin from the swamps colors the water a darker hue.

Gores Landing have campsites on a first-come,first-served basis; we will share sites to fit everyone; small pup tents are advised or share large tent - whatever works and people are comfortable with. There are bathrooms with outdoor showers. There are a total of 12 campsites at Gores, hopefully there will be sites available to us.

EVERYONE IS INVITED FOR SINGLE DAY TRIP and/or to hang out for food/drink at campsite on Friday or Saturday evening, or camp at other locations.

Pets are prohibited at all Marion County Parks.

Everyone on the water is required by law to have a PFD and a whistle.

Rental kayaks are available. Let me know if you need to rent one.

After struggling with this (a lot ...), I'll just be a late Saturday arrival/Sunday kayaker. I'm just too pooped to prepare in the wee hours :\

Is anyone going to paddle Silver Springs on Saturday? I haven't done this paddle in over a year. Let me know if you are interested.

Craig, I assume you are doing breakfast again.

We saw Monkeys today. They were down where there is a boat and a dock that says "private". Unusual location. Saw a deer at Fort King Waterway. We did a shuttle to Gores.

What is the cost to camp per night? Do they have fire rings for my wood I'm brining?

    April 11, 2014

    • Craig G.

$5.00 per night. Plenty of Fire rings for your wood.

Wish I were heading your way. Looks like I'll be nursing my crushed toe for a while. Whole foot is still swollen.
Just think, this means more bacon for every one :-)

Myself and my +1 will arrive Saturday morning about 10:00am.

Charlie, I have never heard of any of those places?

      April 11, 2014

    • Charlie H.

Craig, About 3.2 miles up river from the 316 takeout Eaton Creek intersects the Ocklawaka. This is about 5.4 miles downstream of Gores Landing. The map shows Eaton Creek going about 2.9 miles to Mud Lake. If I am not mistaken, I think the intersection of Eaton Creek and the Ocklawaha is the location of the old ferry dock as well as a small spring.

For our new members, here's the schedule for the mornings. I get up at 6:00 am, get the coffee urn going and set up the coffee station on the tables. By 7:15, we will have bacon, eggs, French toast ready to go in the steam stables. Oh Baby, bring your appetite by 7:30. By 8:00 or 8:15, we are cleaning up and by 8:45 Sam is ready to get the shuttles going for Kayaking. You don't want to be late for the Kayaking shuttles.

If the group would like to do another EPIC breakfast again, please let me know here. Please list what you can bring to contribute, like bacon, eggs, sausage etc.

The group now has a new 60 cup coffee urn, so no need to limit the coffee in the morning. Yea, have a much as you like!!

    1 · April 8, 2014

Holly, that would be great. We could always use more coffee.

Is anyone getting to gores early on fri that would want to kayak.

    April 7, 2014

    • Julie N

Tracy, you mean on Saturday or Friday?

      April 9, 2014

    • Famous A.

Fri. I have day off but I can't get to silver springs any earlier than 11 to do the fri kayak. So Sheri and I are meeting at gores around and 11 and then we're going to kayak somewhere.

Do you need firewood? I can bring a box of split wood.

    April 10, 2014

  • Craig G.

Also, I will have the group cooler. Unless you want to be woken up real early, (most don't) bring your food items to me Friday night. We'll put them in the group cooler, and leave it in my car so critters don't eat our food before we do.

I have lots of paper plates, napkins, hot & cold cups, plastic utensils? Is that needed?

    April 10, 2014

    • Craig G.

We may have enough, but if you would like to being those items, we could use them at the pot luck Sat night, or replace what we use for breakfast.

      April 10, 2014

  • Shari

I'll bring sausage and beans and pancake mix/syrup if someone has a griddle to make?

    April 8, 2014

    • Shari

alright, i'll bring coffee and salad for sat. I assume we need instant coffee; we'll be able to make hot water over fire.

      April 9, 2014

    • Craig G.

I got you one better Shari. There is one outlet, behind the bathroom that I hook the urn up to. Don't bring instant coffee. The urn makes great coffee, and a lot of it. We need a good amount though. Maybe you and I can split the coffee needs.
