Meet at the northern terminus (Mabel trailhead) of the General James A. Van Fleet State Trail.
To reach the Mabel trailhead from Clermont, take Route 50 west; the trailhead is at the intersection of Route 50 and CR 772, on the left about 5 miles west of the Route 50/Bay Lake Road intersection in Mascotte.
The General James A. Van Fleet State Trail is officially designated as part of Florida's Statewide System of Greenways and Trails and is one of Florida's most rural, paved rail-trails. Also designated as a National Recreation Trail®, the Van Fleet State Trail runs through the Green Swamp, the headwaters for some of Florida's most popular paddling destinations--the Withlacoochee (South), Hillsborough and Peace rivers. Landscapes include the natural environments associated with the Green Swamp, former citrus lands and cattle ranches. With only one or two curves in its 29.2 miles, you can choose to go slow and view the wildlife or enjoy it at a brisk pace. An equestrian trail parallels the length of the paved path. The trail has excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, especially between Green Pond Road and Bay Lake Road.

Hog Island Campground is situated along the dark and alluring Withlacoochee River. Within the confines of the Withlacoochee State Forest, Hog Island enjoys the beauty of the surrounding woodland in addition to the serpentine Withlacoochee River, a designated Florida State Canoe Trail. Though holidays and weekends bring their fair share of visitors, Hog Island retains that quiet and relaxed atmosphere that tent campers long to enjoy. The campground is actually across the river from Hog Island. A packed-sand road divides the thick riverside forest, forming a teardrop-shaped loop that circles the campground. Live oak, hickory, and maple trees, draped in Spanish moss, keep the campground shaded. Palmetto and smaller trees form a dense understory dividing the well-dispersed sites. Squirrels scamper about the campground as if they own it.
