1st Annual All Saints Around the Fort Sprint

A race/sprint around Fort Desoto in St. Pete. Paddle, pedal or sail powered kayaks/canoes are invited. Start and end at the boat ramp. From the Ft. Desoto boat ramp, head west out Bunces Pass, turn south toward Egmont Key, turn east around the point and head towards Sunshine Skyway bridge, turn left again at paddlers' discretion (based on draft of boat) and head back towards the boat ramp from the other side. There are over 50 campsites available at Ft. Desoto as of yesterday, they tend to go fast, as well as plenty of hotels close by. Nov. 2nd and 3rd with fishing or a clinic of some sort after the race or that Sunday.

Well, I am going to have to cancel. I was looking forward to getting together with others to paddle here. This is my favorite paddle destination. I hope this gets posted again when the weather is nicer.

I just realized that this is not being put on by Fort Desoto. This is solely a Slacker's event. So I will be waiting for you guys at hole in the hedge at 9 o'clock.

I would wanted to be at the race starting point before the race starts. Whether my boat is appropriate for the weather or not. If I can't race I would still like to be there for the start. Looking at the map the best I can tell is the bridge you're talking about is bunces pass bridge. So I will be driving a white truck with signs that say SRDconstruction. I will park on the right side and then paddle to the docks. If race starts at 9 o'clock then I will try to be at the dock at 8:30. My phone number is[masked]-3226. If I don't find you at the start of the race then I will paddle over to Shelkay. I will be in a green sawyer canoe and possibly a blue rain jacket.

Looks like I'll be joining you guys late no sense it getting up at 4AM to paddle in the rain. Stopping at Bill Jackson's 1st probably put in around 12PM. I'll paddle clockwise around the island and probably meet you around the SE side of the island.

I guess I don't totally know how all this works. My wife and her friend will not be going. I will not be camping. I will only be going for the day. Sorry for the confusion.

No problem Casey. Just tell us what you want to do. GLAD you going.

Are there campsites set aside for the Slackers group?

Yes, sort of. I have a permit for a few of us.

John thank you for the offer to try your boot, I'm looking forward to it. I have already inspected the picture of it very closely. Building a Kayak has been on my list for a long time. Having the sail rig on it is very nice.

Another boat doesn't cost as much as a second motorcycle.
On a serious note I would like to experience the sport of a kayak.
Maybe even learn to roll one before I get too old.

I just got a permit for 4 people for Friday and Saturday. That should cover most of us camping. I will be looking for a site along the leg facing the park. Winds will be out of the NW Sat. afternoon and having ridden out fronts before I'll plan on a windy night after the rain stops.

Lets Meet at the "Whole in the Hedge" instead of the Boat ramp. this launching point has the benefits of avoiding the cost of the bridge and boat docks, and avoidance of the boat traffic coming from the docks. parking is free, and is an easy beach launch. We'll begin and finish here.

I saw the winds, I'm definitely not going off shore. It might be some extra work due to the winds but I would be fine between the island and causeway. You realize it's also going to rain Saturday. Maybe you guys should reschedule that offshore regatta :) I was actually hoping for a good combo of clouds and sunset tomorrow evening (camera) then keep the tents from blowing away Sat. Still analyzing the possibilities.

Yeah it looks like the forecast is getting worse. It was T-storms just after 3PM now they are predicted in the AM as well, bummer....Sunday looks beautiful.

I won't try the death race but if some of you want to campa friday night I could be talked into going early afternoon and setting up a base camp of sorts. Well, staking a claim at least. Reply in this thread if you're interested and I'll go online later and get a permit.

My Kayak is only 12' (I wonder if one of those enlargement kits....nevermind...lmao) and I do not have the skirt. Not sure if my paddle floats (its fiberglass), also do not have a pump to bail water I presume. Other than that I meet all the remaining criteria.

If I do the race how will I meet up with you all later?
The race invited kayaks and canoes.
I am planning on using a 15 1/2 foot Sawyer solo canoe.
I have yet to decide on what ocean kayak to buy.
If any one has some input I would be glad to hear it.

Casey, speak with the members who own sea kayaks. maybe try a few out. The information is invaluable.

Casey, why would you want a cramped up little kayak when you have an awesome boat? :o))

Car pool from Orlando? My parts came in to Bill Jackson's so I will be leaving Orlando @ 4AM Sat. If any one is interested in car pooling I have room for 3 additional kayaks on my truck/trailer and up to 4 riders. Looks like gas will be about $50 so it would be a split among all of us. I can stay as late as 4PM but also need to drop by Bill Jackson on our way back to O-town for my order pick-up.

When does the "race" begin? Where are you meeting for the race - Hedge Hole or somewhere else?

    October 30, 2013

    • Craig G.

Don and all else, lets meet / launch from Hole Hedge at 9:00, paddle out to Shell key to meet EchoFin, then start the Paddle / Race from Shell Key.

Not everyone will be camping so instead of changing the start/finish once again how about we stick to launching from Hole in the hedge.

      October 30, 2013

  • Bill

Do you have to get a permit or anything to camp on Shell Key?

    October 29, 2013

    • Craig G.

We always launch from the Hole in the Hedge, which is the best launch point for day and overnight trips. We also like the launch from Arrowhead Park, at the tip of the North point of Ft Desoto, but you can't park there overnight. After many trips and camp outs, we have never had any problems with parking at the Hole in the Hedge spot.

If my kayak parts come in to Bill Jackson's I will be driving from Orlando for this event else bailing. Not sure if I will leave Friday night or very early Sat yet. I have a foam covered full length cargo rack on my crew cab truck as well as a trailer and can carry 3 kayaks beyond the (2) I plan to bring if anyone that wants to car pool. I need to leave the park at 4PM to make the shop in time.

Any body camping at Ft. Desoto want to share a site?

    October 27, 2013

  • Craig G.

This location, right on the Pinellas BayWay, is just before the bridge that takes you over to Ft Desoto. It will be on the right hand side. Look for the other Kayakers.

Does any one know how many miles this race is?

    October 9, 2013

    • Craig G.

Casey, this is not necessarily a race. many of us will be taking our time circumnavigating Ft Desoto, with several stops along the way. I would estimate that the island circumference is approx. 7 or 8 miles.

This is a great idea. As a means of getting more people involved I took the liberty of creating a Facebook "event page" for this race. If anyone has a problem with me doing this let me know and I will delete the "event" from Facebook.
