Paddle Banana River at Port Canaveral

Well since we can’t go to the Hidden Coast paddling Festival for what ever reason Work, Family or what ever let’s do a Sunday trip in the Banana River at Port Canaveral.

We can go out to Ski Island which is a small Island at the north side of the entrance to Port Canaveral Barge Canal there is a small barge/boat that is a food concession provided by Oasis catering severs cold drinks and hot food or bring your own lunch. We can sit on the island (bring some sort of chair or a beach towel or blanket), swim in the river and have our lunch. From there we can go though the lock and down the barge canal to see the cruise ships up close and personal not to close though as we found out on a previous trip that we got too close. And there are several other islands just to the north of Ski we can paddle around and visit them.

So we can put in at Kelly Park 2550 N. Banana River Drive Merritt Island, FL 32952 we'll put in at the north east part of the park. We'll skirt the causeway across the river to the island. We should be on the water not till 9:05 AM so we can ride the falling tide out it’s not a big current but there is some. So let’s figure on 10:00 Am we should be in the boats and heading out. The morning high is at 9:05 AM. The daytime low tide occurs at 3:06 PM on that day so we can wait till then to catch the rising water back or not. Water will go slack about 2:30

We will see all the usual suspects’ porpoises, Lots of manatees (my last trip here and I saw at least fifty I went over one in the lock right in front of the Lock Master and scared it and it scared me right back, it lifted me and my boat about a foot out of the water), rays and birds, lots of birds!!!!

Now what and who you need to be and what you need to bring you need to- be a proficient paddler NO BEGINNERS sea kayaks only with two sealed bulk heads both forward and aft, a PFD and it must be worn. The water in this part of the river can get a little squirrelly especially when the lock opens. Drinking water, a Paddle float and pump. I would really like to see spray skirts but surely I ask too much!!!!!!

So are you up for this adventure?

Thanks Donald

Well for my first Meetup as an organizer it didn’t go too bad!!!! No got hurt or died nor lost so all in all a good trip if you don’t count the fact that we almost got arrested on a federal homeland security violation and now I am listed on a terrorist watch list and there going though all my past tax returns and all my emails, still all in all not a bad day. Thanks to Dan Sweeney for showing up and keeping this outing from be a total flop LOL. This day started out beautiful water was slack and nearly glass smooth.

We started out and headed for the lock at the canal went up to the last basin on the north side paddle around the cruise ships for a while had nice conversation just mesmerize in the awesomeness of the huge ships 200 ft tall. Then boom a Port Canaveral cop shows up and asked Dan and me to meet him away from the boats so we follow him and he got his ticket book out he’s going to write me a ticket for this Homeland security violation and he wants to see some id well I cant get to mine its behind the seat and were in 60 of 70 feet of water no place to get out..

So he says we should go over to the boat ramp at the park by the bridge, about a half mile away so we do. When we get there there’s another cop already there so we give them our papers and they start there process. On the way over a guy fishing in his kayak seems to know what going on (guess he’s been there done that kinda thing) he says “it like 1500 Dollars fine and maybe some jail” well we think he’s pulling our leg!!! So there going though this process of whatever and they tell us the have call the Coast guard and homeland security and were like man there gonna give us the lethal injection for this.

First let me explain we didn’t know we were doing anything wrong and there’s no signs to indicate other wise. This is not my first pinch at this location LOL we were told on a another trip that we were to close to the boats that we needed to stay away 300 feet so I think we were pretty much in compliance with this. so after about a half hour they come walking down the dock no ticket book in hand

I said to Dan we are either going to jail or there letting us go. Well they lets us go with a warning ticket and my name on the terrorist watch list!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW I think that the government being shut down nobody wanted us :(. And we continued on our journey to ski island and had a couple of cold sodas and laughed. Grateful as hell I didn’t have to go to jail again. MY most sincere apologies to Dan for getting him in what could have had serious consequences. So now you all know the whole story and you know someone who got a ticket in a kayak I have it to prove it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL sorry for the lengthyness
