Cedar Key is an unspoiled gem of a small city, with interesting wooden buildings and magnificent scenery. It gives a glimpse of "Old Florida", and makes a great center for a vacation. This trip differs from most others in this book, in that:

1. The launch point is in the center of a popular vacation city.

2. The main destinations are visible from near the launch point.

3. Tidal currents are strong at spring tides in the main channels, and these can affect the

choice of destination.

4. There are no convoluted tidal creeks to negotiate before reaching the Gulf.

5. There is adequate depth of water throughout.

This is a sensitive area for wildlife. The interior of each of the islands except Atsena Otie Key is closed to public entry. All public access to Seahorse Key beaches is prohibited from March 1st to June 30th each year. This includes a 300 foot buffer round the island. Atsena Otie Key has a jetty on its west side, from which there is a nature trail.

I really enjoyed visiting Cedar Key for the first time and the weather turned in our favor on Saturday for paddling. Cedar Key is a very special place. The Saturday evening potluck food was amazing and I had lots of laughs around the campfire! Thanks Sam for organizing the event. I look forward to my next adventure with the SLACKERS.

This is a reminder to all that have not pre-paid or notified me they are coming but will pay at the Adventure, camping sites will be $25.00 per person. Pay in advance and save some money.

    Activities for the Weekend:
•Friday night - Sunset Diner and cocktail at The Pickled Pelican Bar and Eatery starting at 5:00 pm.
•Saturday - Kayaking out into the bay, to Atsena Ole Key. Explore the island - hopefully going inland to the cemetary, if the bugs are not to bad. Then paddling around the island. If the winds are not to bad we will paddle out to other islands. If the winds are high we will paddle some of the coastal areas.
    •Saturday night - Pot Luck
•Sunday - Open day to explore the city or the other areas to paddle.

Well we have gone from 60 somthing to 30 something. I assume everyone is worried about the weather.
It will rain Friday and maybe Friday night but is suppose to go to 30% on Saturday with very low winds. High around 69 degrees.
It never rains on a Slacker.

Sam-I'm getting concerned about the weather. Hearing reports of 50% chance of rain both Saturday and Sunday, with thunderstorms on Friday. The refund policy is 4 days in advance correct? What would constitute cancelling the event?

    February 19, 2014

    • Craig G.

      I like Sharon's weather forecast.

      February 20, 2014

    • Craig G.

The only weather event that may cause a cancellation is a hurricane, and even then I wouldn't count on it.

Just ask one of our members what 55 deg water feels like on a 45 deg day after paddling 8 miles.

Five Golden Rules for Water Safety
    http://www.coldwatersafety.org/nccwsRules3.html#tabs-3

    "What will you do if....
    Incapacitated by cold.
Blown out to sea by high wind.
Paddle breaks, blows away, or is lost in rough water.
Ankle leash breaks and boat blows away.
Waves dump water into cockpit and boat fills with water.
Fog rolls in - can’t see anything.
Capsize and can’t get back in boat.
    You get lost."

I don't have to worry about the ankle leash, I don't have one :-(

    February 1, 2014

    • Fawn

This is starting to sound intense. How advanced is this trip?

      February 3, 2014

    • Sam G.

We will be paddling as a group. It is not an advanced paddle. Some open water as we paddle to an island, everyone will be required to ware PFD.
