Key West Fun

This is a Cross post with Kayak Explorers. If you have signed up with that Group, then DO NOT sign up here. Please

This will be a Camping,Kayaking,Snorkeling,Touring,Party and Fun Adventure.

I have Paid for the camp ground area. Our space has been Reserved.I have reserved an area for 21 to 40 people. If we get 21 or more to go,the cost will be $13 plus 12 1/2% tax. Total approx. $14.63 per person per night.

We are in a Resort, but will be Tent camping in a Resort. No water or Power hook-up. There will be all available at bath house and other areas. You can look at the Resort;www.koa.com/campgrounds/sugarloaf-key

Info about the Keys; www.fla-keys.com

Average Temps.....

Water:70/72 degrees

Air: High 70 degrees and Low 66 degrees Bring your bikes also,if you can.

Sunset: 6:16pm

This is my plan as of now.

Friday morning at 9:00/9:30am we will launch from Sugar loaf Marina. It will cost $3 to park,so if we can buddy up on transporting and vehicles. We will head out to explore Perky Creek,5 mile Creek and Dreguez Key. This can be a short or a longer paddle. For those of us that are going on the Snorkel trip will need to be back in time to head to Key West. After our Snorkel trip,we will head over to dinner.

Saturday morning at about the same time, we will leave from the campground. We will head South through Pirate Cove and to a couple Creeks and mangrove tunnels. We will have a LOCAL guide with us. I will take the less aggressive paddlers on the shorter route and the Guide will take the paddlers who want a more lengthy trip. She might go as far as Sammy's Creek.

Saturday afternoon or evening we can go into Key West to Tour,Explore,Shop and of course. Enjoy Mallory Square at SUNSET.

Sunday is our flex day. I have two possible trips. We can ALL decide what we want to do.

What can I say? It was fun! Good people, no mosquitoes, and the interesting KOA culture to observe. Thanks for orchestrating all of it, Brian. And for ordering the wind and current to be in my face both ways! Made me tough. I spent the next three days in Flamingo in the Everglades kayaking -- maybe the group could consider it?
(And if anyone wants the recipe for the birthday "Slutty Brownies" -- google it.)

Brian, thanks so much for arranging for the camping on this busy weekend. So many activities were planned so we could be as active or as mellow as we wanted. Any opportunity to enjoy the Keys should be relished, and we used the KOA as the launch point to explore quieter destinations (hope you visited to Big Pine and No Name Keys) as well as always-active Key West. Beautiful sunsets and the spectacular full moon were the icing on the cake!

I want to thank Brian for organizing this great Adventure. He did a wonderful job of putting together activities everyday that were very enjoyable to do. The Slackers are very lucky to have Brian as an Organizer. I look forward to many more enjoyable Adventures Brian plans.
I also want to personally thank Brian for the Birthday dinner Saturday night he planned for Cindy, Kathy and myself.

I'm thrilled to be joining this enthusiastic and varied entertainment outing! I'm back for more even after getting hypothermic in the Withlahochee...
Quick question please. On top it says Thursday 9 AM. Yet it doesn't look as if any outing starts until Friday AM. I assume we'll be having a good time together Thursday night but is there any reason to arrive before Thursday dinner? I'm going to have to cancel a whole day of work Thursday otherwise and it's a very long drive.
Appreciate knowing ASAP so I can schedule.
And count me in on snorkeling, dancing, sunset appreciation, cooking and occasional silliness...
(Also not thrilled with parking in Key West. Had my car towed there one New Year's Eve! To another island!)

Unfortunately, I sometimes get sea sick so it would depend upon the weather and boating conditions. Otherwise, I will try to meet the group at the restaurant in the evening depending upon transportation to and from KW.

Is anyone driving from Orlando area that is carpooling? I have my own kayak but my car is having issues and would be scared it wouldn't make it. I do have a shorter kayak that's 9 ft that if there is room to bring or whoever (if anyone) can give me a lift can use for free =)

Has arrangements been made to get to and from Key West which is about 30 miles away? I did some research and the KOA has a shuttle that runs 10 am to 6 pm for $25 rd trip. The City bus is $4 one way until about 9:30 p.m. but takes about 1 hr. A van cab for 7 costs $65 one way which will be the best way if we return late in the evening. Possibly we could take the City bus down and a van cab back. Parking in Key West can be a real problem plus traffic can be an issue. Also, I assume no one wants to drink and drive. I learned that the group will be camping in the "Green" tent area. I am bringing my A-frame camper which required an rv site but I will be close to the tent area. Is anyone interested in seeing the National Key Deer Refuge which is about 30 minutes north of Sugarloaf Key?

    January 29

    • Matt

I really appreciate you guys figuring out how we can get around. I know we will not want to drive after many of these activities. This will be great!

Just want to remind those attending - Monday is a HOLIDAY for most schools & some businesses as it is President's Day - so an extra day to enjoy a nice drive back.

Found out I have off Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon this week and wondered if there are open camping spots for this trip? I wouldn't be able to get there until late Thursday or mid Friday morning.

Thanks, just signed up. Do we need to pay you ahead of time? Thanks for organizing!

Pay for camping when you show up. If you plan to Snorkel, then call and RSVP. They nwill charge your card the day we go.

Brian, would you recommend a touring kayak or a sit-on-top kayak for the paddles you have planned? Also, I could carpool from Pinellas County if anyone is interested.

    January 16, 2014

    • Brian K.

Any type of kayak will be good. A High $$$$ Sea kayak will not be needed. Mostly bays and backwater paddles. 4 to 8 miles.

      January 16, 2014

    • Brian K.

Stephanie is looking and Ed Conway has offered to drive and carry kayaks on his trailer.

      January 17, 2014

All paddles are dependent on tides. Friday is a moderate paddle. Head to the Fury port for a snorkel Event. Saturday and Sunday mid to late am are paddles. After paddles it is open to tour the area. Saturday might be our night to hit Malory Square for Sunset ,Dinner and Fun.
    We can talk Thursday night.

As to food and cooking. Thursday night is wide open as to everyone arriving at different times. Friday night we will eat at a nearby Rest. after our snorkel trip. Sat. and Sun. night are up for discussion. We have a Large amount of members from both groups so I am sure many will do their own thing. I plan on bringing my camp stove and and a small grill. Kristi and I are doing Grilled Tequila Lime Fish tacos Saturday night and Bourbon Steaks Sunday night.

Our time is getting close,Really fast. I am asking all to POST if you would like to,that is. Carpool, Joint cooking, kayaking hauling and tent sharing. It is a long drive and 5 days. Buddy system is nice.

Recommend that anyone interested in the sunset boat trip make your reservations soon. It looks like a great trip but might sell out. Thanks Brian for putting this together.

Campers are not allowed in the tent camping area so I booked an RV site for the weekend. They still have a couple sites left if anyone is interested.

    1 · January 3, 2014

Wow!!!! I was told that none would be available. They were booked and had a Wait-list. Good for you.

Was just curious about prices. I remember that my kids camped here for spring break a while ago and it even more expensive for that prime week. Thanks for setting this up B!

This is a bargain! Just checked the KOA site and tent sites are $69 a day...wow. Would like to carpool from St Pete or south.
