Trip Cancelled: Oleno Camping & State Parks Exploring Northeast Region

  • to
  • Oleno State Park

410 S.E. O'Leno Park Road, High Springs, FL (map)

    29.826906 -82.596786

  • Trip is cancelled. Rescheduled in September. Trip was requested to coordinate with Suwannee Paddling trip which was cancelled.

'Here is some info on possible local activities for posterity.

North Gainesville/Alachua (half hour away) Trio:

Devils Milhopper is in Gainesville. It is closed Mon and Tues. Sinkhole, lots of Steps to get down.  Dog friendly.

Dudley Farm -Working farm. Picnic, Nature trail see buildings & exhibits

San Felasco Hammock -Prairie, Hardwood Hammock. TONS of SHADED trails.

    Folk Festival: (40 minutes).

Stephen Foster Cultural Center. Folk Fest Fri Sat Sun. Can visit other days, too.

    Local area:

Rum Island (on Santa Fe) Picnic, Swim in Spring.

O'Leno and River Rise: Hike, Swim in River.  Short paddle.

Ichetucknee Springs is fifteen minutes away. short hike, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking.

    Short drive:

Lafayette Blue Springs. Hiking open. Check for updates on Springs.

    Big Shoals  -Look over Bluffs.

    Where we are staying:

    O'leno State Park.

    "O'Leno State Park

Located along the banks of the scenic Santa Fe River, a tributary of the Suwannee River, the park features sinkholes, hardwood hammocks, river swamps, and sandhills. As the river courses through the park, it disappears underground and reemerges over three miles away in the River Rise State Preserve.  Canoes and bicycles are available for rent. While hiking the nature trails, visitors can look for wildlife and enjoy the beauty of native plants. The shady, full-facility campground is the perfect place for a relaxing overnight stay. Located on U.S. 441, six miles north of High Springs."

Our plan is to explore State Parks (day trips) in the region, and use Oleno State Park as a home base. Parks we are possibly going to include Big Shoals, Stephen Foster, Ichetucknee Springs, Lafayette Blue Springs, O'leno and River Rise, Devils Milhopper, San Felasco Hammock, Dudley Farm.

     Activities:
    Up to you.

Many of the parks are great for a nice picnic lunch.

Kayaking depends on the least experienced kayaker and river levels and FLOW! The park sits on the Santa Fe, there is a launch at the Park and a Boat ramp nearby.  Ichetucknee river is nearby.  The Branford put in on Suwanee is nearby.  I predict the river levels won't be a problem, but the flow rate may still be high. The rivers are dropping fast, but the flow rates are still way above the typical flow.  There is an app called "River Data". Has great historic data.  Ichetucknee is open for Kayaking.  (So is Econfina but it is too far).  Some of the Springs are currently "browned out".  The state parks website, there are updates for the individual parks. Perhaps they will be ok for a land visit before you can safely kayak.   Any park alert will be on the front page of the park when you click on it.

There is a Folk Music Festival going on at Suwannee (Stephen Foster -happens every Memorial) , Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  $25/day $50 weekend in advance. $30/$60 at Gate.

As an individual you may plan and participate in whatever activities you want.

Find us at: Magnolia loop site 8. Meet us at our campsite the night before, to figure out next days plan.

This is an informal fun trip. Join us if you want, or tell us about great restaurants, places in the area. It is all good.

    FYI in  general:

If you are camping please note your campsite and days.  If you decide not to go please update your rsvp.

Some hiking areas at some parks are muddy, bring crocs not tennis shoes for them (or to change into).

Once tubing season starts, Ichetucknee gets busy.

It is possible not all activities at all parks are open.  Look up the park you want to visit's web page for any advisories.

Srwmd gives all the information about Santa Fe Suwanee watershed. the only water at action is Three Rivers at confluence of ItchMetuchen and Santa Fen take out maybe iffy because of road conditions and washouts from flood I would be up for anything down to the 47 bridge on that Santa Fe or anything on the swanee from Dowling Park South to branford. That way I can shuttle anybody if need be. Santa Fe being the easiest

Thanks. I'm currently retired. Anytime you want to go kayaking give me a shout. I just live in Ocala South of Silver River.

Thanks for the prompt notice. You might check out Devils Milhopper for a hike (stairs) with the dog. Ichetucknee is a gorgeous place too. It was great meeting you and your husband at Paines Prairie.

I would not be interested in driving 2 hrs one way to kayak after driving 5 hrs to O'Leno SP. However, I am interested in the music festival.

I think I will cancel too. I stayed because Evie was coming. I put on the trip because you wanted it, to go with Suwannee Paddle. That canceled but you said you still wanted to Kayak. I've been trying to come up with suitable paddle. I

This is the river height and Flow data. http://waterdata.usgs.gov/fl/nwis/current/?type=flow&group_key=basin_cd At this time Suwanee at Branford is running 24,000 f/s when the median is 6,000. And 6.000 in itself is above average for other times and locations. I'm not saying I fully and completely comprehend it...BUT The data appears to support what folks are saying about it. I'm talking about kayaking the Wacissa before Aucilla runs into it.

    May 14, 2014

  • Linda S

Plan B. A cool kayaking Springs option is the Wacissa River to Cedar Island and BACK. I talked to an outfitter. It is good. If Evie wants to go kayak rentals are an option here: http://www.wacissarivercanoerentals.com/directions.htm Another Outfitter posted this same trip for May 4th and May 21st. This is three mile downstream and 3 mile upstream. No need for a shuttle. Takes advantage of the springs area. This is an INTERMEDIATE trip. Water is clearing...and this river in this section is not impacted by the flooding. It is a two hour drive to get there.

I have a campsite at O'Leno SP from 5/21-28 but may cut it short since we are not doing the Suwannee River paddle as planned. I'm considering going to the Swannee River Music Festival as we discussed and would like to explore other places in the surrounding area. I'll bring my kayak in case the conditions improve for kayaking. I've emailed a couple others to see if they are interested in the music festival 5/23-25 also.

Please check the group description for the latest update on the trip. I posted it at the request of a Slacker member. We can do whatever we want. You got to like that. We can have a blast. Trip may change based on who the participants are on a particular day, what equipment they have (kayak or not), the weather and river and Spring conditions. I've kayaked Ichetucknee, Lower Suwanee, Sante Fe & O'leno before but never led. So feel free to come up with ideas. I do not know the area well. I would like to know what days folks are going to be around. So please post your plans by Monday May 19th.

Linda, let me know if you want to change our plans. I assume there's plenty to see and do (hiking, site seeing, etc.) even if we don't get to kayak but hope the water level will be down to do some kayaking. I can't go over Labor Day for the rescheduled Suwannee trip due to work.

    May 11, 2014

Ok. I've talked to Linda W. about the trip. She will think about whether she wants to go.

I may not camp there but I would like to join in some of the activities especially kayaking the Suwannee and just getting to meet people

Kayaking the Suwannee is another meetup event and needs to be signed up separately. Trip was full. Suwannee trip was cancelled due to high water levels. Look forward to meeting you. I have not decided whether to bring a kayak this trip. Will know more in ten days.

Sean, It will be great to meet you. I emailed you off list to get your number to talk to you...to know when and where you are available. I can bring a kayak if we are kayaking. This trip is customized based on participants. Evie and I will be there three days Wed, Thurs Fri camping and exploring. I will stay longer if there is stuff to do. I look forward to hearing from you and getting your river report update in a few days.

I would not recommend the itchnetucknee unless you wanted to pay the state park and only go a mile and a half. The water is too high at Sr 27. I can give a good river report in a few days. I could shuttle some kayaks the choice should be made according to the least experienced kayaker because of strainers due to high water

    1 · May 11, 2014

    • Linda S

Thanks Sean. I was thinking same thing myself about the strainers, and the least experienced kayaker. I would appreciate a river report in a few days. Thanks.
