Cost: $90. Includes four hours of training, Notary fees for your application, and 22 caliber ammunition for target shooting plus 20 rounds for trying out larger caliber guns.
Post class requirements include:
1. A passport photo (which can be obtainable at Walgreens) ~ $10.00
2. Finger printing at your local sheriff or police department (approx. $5.00),
3. Send your notarized Concealed Weapons Class completion certificate along with photo, and finger printing to the State of Florida along with a check for $112.00 which covers the Florida state required criminal background and FBI finger print check.
The permit processing time will take approximately 3 to 6 weeks.
This Concealed Weapons Class completion certificate is good indefinitely. You may apply for your Government issued Concealed Weapons License immediately or you can wait for a later date.
The permit to carry is valid for seven years and can be renewed.
The first part of the course is a two hour discussion of fire arms: gun safety, state laws – what, when and where you can use guns, what situations lend and do not lend themselves to gun use, types of fire arms and ammunitions, selection and fit of weapon based on your needs and your individual fit, and alternatives to fire arms. There will be a break after this session to get food (if you want bring a sandwich and drink) and travel to the gun range (3 miles).
The second half is a two hour practice session on the shooting range. The training weapon will be a .22 caliber pistol which has low noise and little recoil. After the practice with the .22, there will be other guns that you can try out to become familiar with their fit, size, weight, noise and recoil. These include: 9mms, .38s, 45s, 357 magnum, 380s, and 44 magnums.
Instructors: Officer Bill Whately – Polk County Sheriff’s Dept. – retired. Bill has been teaching Police Standards (Weapons) Training Instructor for new police officers as well as Weapon Permit classes for citizens for the County Sheriff Department for 25 years. He is a State Certified Instructor. The other trainer is Jim Ayers who is an expert in weapons, hunter and competitive shooter specializing in hand guns.
