2.  Finger printing at your local sheriff or police department (approx. $5.00),

3.  Send your notarized Concealed Weapons Class completion certificate along with photo, and finger printing to the State of Florida along with a check for $112.00 which covers the Florida state required criminal background and FBI finger print check.

This Concealed Weapons Class completion certificate is good indefinitely. You may apply for your Government issued Concealed Weapons License immediately or you can wait for a later date.

The permit to carry is valid for seven years and can be renewed.

Description:

The first part of the course is a two hour discussion of fire arms: gun safety, state laws – what, when and where you can use guns, what situations lend and do not lend themselves to gun use, types of fire arms and ammunitions, selection and fit of weapon based on your needs and your individual fit, and alternatives to fire arms.  There will be a break after this session to get food (if you want bring a sandwich and drink) and travel to the gun range (3 miles).

The second half is a two hour practice session on the shooting range. The training weapon will be a .22 caliber pistol which has low noise and little recoil.  After the practice with the .22, there will be other guns that you can try out to become familiar with their fit, size, weight, noise and recoil. These include:  9mms, .38s, 45s, 357 magnum, 380s, and 44 magnums.

Instructors: Officer Bill Whately – Polk County Sheriff’s Dept. – retired.  Bill has been teaching Police Standards (Weapons) Training Instructor for new police officers as well as Weapon Permit classes for citizens for the County Sheriff Department for 25 years. He is a State Certified Instructor.  The other trainer is Jim Ayers who is an expert in weapons, hunter and competitive shooter specializing in hand guns.

Does this include the permit itself or is there an additional cost afterwards?

Sorry Matt I missed the additional Florida State required Concealed Weapons License fee of $112.00 when you submit this application package (background and fingerprint check) to the state of Florida.

My question would be, I do not have a firearm at this time but have been seriously thinking about one and a conceal weapons license since I travel so much by myself. Would this be a first step for me or is this for those more experience?

This training is also an opportunity to try out different types and caliber guns with trained instructors to see what you would be most comfortable with for a future gun purchase.

Thanks you both for the response. I really like to do this...timing is not great for me. Is this something that might be offered later on?
