Juniper Springs Run - (We will be camping at Alexander Springs)

Juniper Springs may be one of the clearest streams in Florida. The springhead is enclosed in a rock-and-concrete wall that provides a large swimming pool. Juniper Creek starts very narrow below rich canopied woodland. It then enters the gorgeous Juniper Prairie Wilderness, through which it flows until just above FL19 bridge. Juniper Springs is a 7 mile pristine spring run, with lots of twists and turns. First timers will be amazed with this paddle, crystal clear shallow water at launch. It's 7 miles of fun filled downstream paddle with its own little shoals near the end for that very brief .25 class whitewater experience! We can pullover at Sweetwater Springs for a cool dip before ending our trip at Juniper Wayside takeout. No disposable containers, including soda cans/bottles allowed on this run. Bring your drink in a reusable container. We will unload kayaks at Juniper Spgs, then drive vehicles to Juniper Wayside Park on SR-19 a few miles down the road and then all pile in a few vehicles back to Springs and start our adventure

Starting at the canoe ramp, the upper spring run is crystal-clear and less than one foot deep. A white sand bottom gives the appearance of paddling down a sandy, twisty and narrow roadway. Palmetto, palms, oak and cypress form almost a complete canopy over the small creek, which is much appreciated on hot summer days. About two miles downstream, the run enters Juniper Prairie Wilderness, a sanctuary for wildlife and those seeking to get far away from the urban world. The Florida Trail passes through here, offering a great place to hike, as well as paddle.

Further downstream the creek becomes wider and deeper while a matting of leaves cover the bottom. A nice picnic spot with small wooden dock is at the half-way mark. Near the takeout the creek widens again into a flood plain / Savannah complete with marsh grasses, alligators and many wading birds. The takeout is just beyond the SR 19 bridge on the right side of the creek. Juniper Creek continues for another 2.5 miles before emptying into Lake George.

Sad days-the famous but aincient bus/camper-DAS BUS- is kaput! This weekend and significant portion of my outdoor world is derailed. I have no idea where I am going to put all of my camp stuff. Why don't we have an outdoor gear swap meet up? I am gone for now but hope to resurface soon. : (((

Saturday nite potluck at large group site? Or is there any interest in supporting the local economy @ a nearby restaurant? Any ideas?

    February 18, 2013

    • Carl R.

I like the pot lucks but...there are a couple good restaurants in Umatilla only about 20 minutes from the campground. Would be nice to just load up a few cars and go to a good warm sit down.

      February 18, 2013

Hello Sam! I'll share tent with Anna..... but .... is any chance I can rent a kayak for Saturday and Sunday.Hope it's not to late.

    February 15, 2013

  • Ronda G

Sam, I am a bit confused with all the comments. I signed up for Alexander Springs trip on Sunday, Feb 24th. Are we still doing that one or is it going to be Juniper Springs? If so, is Juniper Springs for the novice paddler too? Thanks!

    February 6, 2013

    • Sam G.

We are still doing Alexander. Because of the large number of people paddling this trip, some people are going to paddle other places or swap the days the paddle the two rivers we have planned. I will still lead the Alexander on Sunday.

      February 6, 2013

    • Ronda G

Thank you for the clarification. I will see you Saturday night!

      February 6, 2013

  • Victoria P

With this large group is there any interest in having half the group paddle juniper on Sunday, perhaps paddling a different run (salt springs or silver river)on Saturday? Just a thought..

    January 28, 2013

    • Hiker E.

I've never been there and would like to do Salt Springs on Sat as well!!!I can help with cart pushing if need be as well Victoria.....Would do Juniper on Sunday then if that is what everyone is thinking.....

      February 5, 2013

Victoria, Sam and I will be posting a Salt Springs Trip on Saturday by next week.

Anna and I will be sharing a tent. Anyone have room on their site?

    January 22, 2013

  • Victoria P

Ive never paddled salt springs...is there any interest in a group paddling salt springs or silver springs on Sunday? And is there someone who could lead it?

    January 21, 2013

    • Julie N

I would like either one. Never been to Salt Springs. Silver River is also an option. Not sure if that's the same as Silver Springs.

      January 21, 2013

    • Carl R.

Silver Springs is the headwater and Silver River flows out of the spring 5 miles to the Oklawaha River.

I have site 63. I have a pop-up tent trailer that will sleep several people. If interested let me know. Also if you are reserving a site most people reserve in loop D. Its a nice park with hot showers. I think the rule is two vehiclas with plates so you will have to park somewhere else. Parking can get to be a problem. But we can always car pool.

    December 7, 2012

    • Julie N

Sorry I didn't reply yesterday. One of the people is out of state right now. I may still have a spot but I see you are planning to share a site. if I do have a spot I will e-mail you and see if you still want to share. That way maybe someone else can have a spot. Let me know is that works for you.

      January 17, 2013

    • Donna T.

No prob on reply. I am sharing a site on Sat but she can not go Fri and the website says site is not available Fri. If you have a spot in your camper could stay there Fri nite; if not will just come up early Sat. Thanks.
