2nd Annual New Years Eve Party at Mill Dam Ocala National Park (4 days 3 nights)

  • Dec 29, 2012 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

We will be camping, kayaking, hiking, biking and celebrating the end of one great year and the beginning of a new fun year. We will be camping Saturday, Sunday and Monday night . Come for a day or for the whole 3 days. I will be posting various trips for the enjoyment of all our SLACKERS.

We have reserved the entire site for the exclusive use for our entire SLACKERS group.

There will be a cost of $10.00 per night per person. We will be providing New Years snacks, mixers and party favors and perhaps some surprises (I'm trying to find out if the Rolling Stones are available)

Mill Dam Group Campground offers a fun and relaxing setting for groups of up to 150 to enjoy Ocala National Forest. Large picnic shelters and access to outdoor and water recreation make this area ideal for family reunions and other large parties.

Natural Features:

Located in north central Florida, the Ocala National Forest spans four counties and 383,000 acres. It is the southernmost and oldest national forest east of the Mississippi River and protects the world's largest contiguous sand pine scrub forest.

The campground and recreation area sit in the shade of live oak trees overlooking Mill Dam Lake. Numerous animals make their home in the area, including alligators, turtles, deer, raccoons, black bear and many bird species.

Recreation:

The campground sits along the 168-acre Mill Dam Lake, and water activities are popular among campers and day-use visitors.

Anglers come from all over to enjoy bass fishing. Campers can bring their boats, canoes and kayaks for easy access to the water via an adjacent boat ramp.

A large swimming beach and picnic area are great ways to keep the kids entertained.

Facilities:

In the spring, summer and early fall, Mill Dam is a day-use area only. For the remainder of the year, it becomes a group campground and recreation area for both day-use and tent camping.

Amenities include a picnic shelter, group grills, picnic tables and flush toilets. The parking lot can hold up to 70 vehicles.

A boat ramp adjoins the recreation area, on a separate entrance.

Nearby Attractions:

The Ocala National Forest is notable for its extensive off-road trail system catering to both ATV enthusiasts and Jeeps, as well as being a traditional destination for deer hunters from around Central Florida. These opportunities are available within a short drive.

This was my first event with the Slackers and it was great, a little cold Saturday, but we survived. Thanks to Sam and everyone that helped out. Next camp out I'll have to be put in the back forty, I've heard from fellow campers that I snore a little, must have been the wine or the cold or both. To my knowledge,I don't snore. Ha Ha

This was a great 4 day / 3 night event. We we cold for the first two nights and then we had a perfect New Years Eve night. I want to thank all of the Slackers for presenting me the wonderful watercolor portrait that Carly Johnston painted of me. The only thing better than this weekend was the shower I took when I got home.

OMG I was on my way driving over tonight and ran into some TAX issues with MY Health Savings Account. They freaking called me four minutes until closing on December 31st. I was driving on US 40 and ran out of cell service...then the HSA office closed by the time I turned around. I hurried home and found receipts, issued a check and hopefully they will accept my contritbution return. I got within 5 miles before I had to turn around....sniff sniff.

If anyone is interested I will be launching for an out and back lazy paddle on the Alexander Springs run noonish on Sunday. Feel free to gather and group it out. Your distance and pace is your own-5 minutes or 5 hours. This is an easy beginer river though you start downstream and (duh) return upstream against a fairly easy current. The river is very wide open and scenic with no settlement or obstructions for about 4 miles downstream. There are carts to shuttle boats from the parking lot to the put in. To find it go east on SR 40 past Juniper Spgs to the traffic at SR 19 then turn right (south) 5)miles or so to a left turn (east) a few miles then left. Look for the left turn when you get to some scruffy housing on both sides of the road. There should be a sign unless some yahoo is patching his trailer with it. I will be there-look for the fat white guy with a Santa white beard. RSVP or just show up. My phone[masked] for info or if lost or confused-I hope there is service there.

Carl: Passes-we don't need no stinking passes! Don't mention me on public social media-the boys in the lab coats are still looking for me. You have no idea how difficult it is to get out of one of those jackets that tie your arms around your back. THIS has been a public service announcement.

Sam et al-My current plan is to park the bus at Alexander Springs with a small group. Hope to hook up-maybe the Silver River run on Monday. I could possibly help coordinate a lazy out and back at Alexander Spgs (a true no brainer). Probably best not to make commitments for Tuesday due to likely mental competency issues.

Only a few days left to our end of the year party. I plan on arriving Saturday around noon to begin setting up for the 3 nights of camping.
We will paddle both Juniper Springs and Silver River on both Sunday and Monday. I will lead one (Juniper on Sunday - 9:30 am and Silver River 9:30 on Monday) and Craig will lead Silver River on Sunday and Juniper on Monday. If I can get some other people to volunteer to lead other trips, we will add more trips.
Saturday will be wet, Sunday night will be cold but Monday will be perfect.
Monday diner will be one me, Sunday diner is pot luck and the rest on the meals will be on you.

    December 24, 2012

I will bring my djembe! And any percussion items will work. Five gallon buckets and a stick, a cow bell, oatmeal box, pie plates, two hard wood sticks, basically anything that you can form a beat with. Sounds like fun !!

      December 24, 2012

    • Carl R.

I will bring my Tongue Drum too. Yes, it is a real instrument. Not what you are thinking. It has 10 tongues. Google it !!

We are about a week away from this event. Some people have had a problem paying the $10.00 per night fee. Don't worry, just bring the money and I will collect at the site.
I will be providing bar-b-que chicken, ribs, chopped pork, slaw and beans on Monday night. All other meals are on you.
Let's plan on a "pot luck" dinner on Sunday night. Please let me know what you can provide.
I still need volunteers to lead paddle at various sites around the camp site each day.
I will provide an agenda by Tuesday night.

    December 23, 2012

    • Carl R.

Are we going to just paddle around the camp site or actually going to a river to paddle ?

      December 24, 2012
