Yes there are costs, just a set of the Florida trail maps is $100.  And Sam has purchased a trailer and several kayaks so that members who would like to try out kayaking at a minimal cost  - it is possible for them.  And I would venture to guess that the trailer alone has already exhausted the minimal fees that have thus far been collected.   Not to mention he did add 2 more yaks this year -  Sam the pongo is mine ---  at over $1000.

The plan is also to be able to throw a free new years eve party this year with raffle items like maybe that awesome carbon paddle you kayakers are drooling over -  everyone who has paid will be in the raffle.  So no one is going to get rich here.  Oh and the yearly fees are $144.  for the site.  Also planning these trips can eat up an extraordinary amount of time.

And thanks to Sam for the rescue on the withlacoochee trip - he came with his trailer and picked all of us up after I under calculated river mileage - went 25 miles with about 6 more to go - was supposed to be 20.  He did this at no charge - just came and got us and placed us where we were supposed to be.  So free shuttle - can't put a price on that.

For a breakdown of fees collected you can go to the slacker site and there is a drop down box at top that has money collected and you can see a rough break down of money that went to dues, slacker trips etc.  It's all there.

There are 711 members but very few that show up to the functions. At best you have maybe 100 active members of the group. Those who want to continue to be part of the group will pay, the others will either leave the group or
just not be bothered paying.  Being the coordinator of a Meetup group does incur costs, not just
the website itself but other expenses as well.  Sam did send out an email explaining the breakdown awhile back when he announced the change.

I'm curious as to this as well. There are 711 members currently, 7K in  " membership dues " ??   I haven't seen what these funds will used for, what they will be applied to.  More then likely .. I'm gonna be a Slacker elsewhere ..

What is the fee for?  Did not know that there was a fee to be a member when I joined.  So, I guess I will be unjoining.

As I have notified the Slackers before, our annual dues are to be paid by March 1, 2013.
If you have not paid the $10.00 annual dues you will not be removed from the Slackers access to seeing what adventures we are planning every week but you will not be able to attend any Slacker adventures. You can pay your dues at anytime and then you will be able to participate in our many fun adventures
As on March 1, 2013 anyone who has RSVP for a Slackers event will be removed and anyone on the waiting list who has paid will be moved up.
You can pay your dues on PayPal or by mailing your fees to me. (If you mail or have mailed your dues to me please let me know how to identify you on the membership list since a lot of you have the same names)
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
