I didn't save the exact email, however I recall someone asking for documentation of expenses for a meetup group.  The following is not the records for the slackers.

I have run a outdoor recreation meetup group for 5 years and the graph attached shows the income and expenses over that 5 year period.  The expenses recorded do not include gas, payment for my time administering the site, planning the trips, and countless other duties involved with organizing a meetup group.  The net profit of $3,088.47 divided by 5 equals $617.69 per year.  When I subtract just gas and deprecation (this money is reported to the irs, as are the expenses), I am in the hole every year.

Let me state this another way, to clarify my point.  Take the total cash in at $26,067.71 and divide by 5 equals $5,213.54 per year.  Even if the slackers take in $5,000.00 per year from the dues, they will still be in the negative.

Anyone care to question the need for some type of fee system for meetup groups now??

By the way Carl, what group charges $5.00 per meetup? .....dona

It's the American dream to make money, give him a break I say.
So what if it only costs him $150 a year to pay for the MeetUp.

I completely agree. I have really tried to hold back,but..... here it goes.
You Passive Aggressive @ucks. Delete yourself. Don't Demand to be Deleted. For only $10,you whining like a freaking Babies.
I speak for myself,as an Assistant Organizer of several groups. We,as Organizers spend many hours before and after each Event. For FREE. We go out of our way to make things LOOK easy. All you do is show up,have fun, then leave. How many Events has Sam been to personally? Maybe over 200? Each Event takes 3 hours minimum to plan. That is 600 hours just in planning. Not including travel time to and from events, plus fuel, and wear and tear to vehicle. Breathe.
The point is......GO AWAY (Quietly) , if you do not want to pay. We will not miss you. You are not, Simply Laid Back,Camper or Kayaker.
This is my opinion(Brian K. ). N ot a SLACKER'S Meet-Up view or statement.

Really !!! ???
I have no problem paying my dues as I will be selfishly taking advantage of all the very hard work and massive amount of time and energy spent by Sam and all the other asst. organizers who set up their events and activities. When I spend $50.00 in gas to get to an event....$10.00 a year for so many great opportunities seems minor !! Another local outdoor group charged $5.00 for EACH outing. Why are you guys whining about $10.00 a YEAR for countless activities?? Seven-thousand dollars !!! Are you kidding. So far we don't have 200 paid members...that's $[masked] and it still doesn't cover Sam's and other peoples costs. The best part of the charge is it gets rid of those who RSVP and are no shows and don't have the decency to cancel so others can attend events or who have NEVER attended a single event. Membership in SLACKERS is NOT a merit badge. It is an interest in going outdoors. If your idea of being outdoors is sending emails at the Starbucks pa tio, you are not for us. The SLACKERS records are not open to anyone except those who Sam feels appropriate and I hope it stays that way!! Sam, as you have heard, you are an awesome leader and great man. I would gladly have the great orator Donald fall on a sword for you !! See you in the great outdoors, Carl Reiche
