Central Illinois Canoe and Paddling Meetup Group Pages

Here is information on how to use this site.

Thanks for your interest in exploring paddling in Central Illinois! Please make suggestions as to any location you would be interested in paddling. If you are new to paddling let us know. Although it certainly helps to own a kayak or canoe, rentals are available with some trips. Also many members have extra kayaks or canoes. Feel free to ask if you can borrow one. If you are an experienced paddler we always enjoy having the advantage of that experience. Feel free to suggest or schedule trips. If a trip requires a certain level of experience to attend let us know.

Under the header for DISCUSSIONS you will find a section for topics of interest, gear swap, gear discussion and trip reports. I also added a category for pick up (informal) trips. You can post there if you are looking for a paddle partner. You get updates on these forums whenever someone posts on it by clicking on "Track this Forum". This is especially helpful if you are looking for a paddling partner or trying to sell some gear. I also recently added forum for future trip planning. I am asking for help so we can post even more trips next year! Some of the categories in this section are new. So help get them started! If you have suggestions for improvement of this website please let me know.

Under the header for PAGES I also added a resource section with links to paddling related internet sites that I think are very useful. This includes links to river gauges. A copy of the liability waiver is also there. There is also a page on trip leader and paddler responsibilities. If you know of another site you would like me to add to this list please let me know.

Everyone likes photos of course. The PHOTO section shows photos from any meetup where they were added. After a meetup go to where your past trip is posted and click on add photos. In the future you can find your photos there and in the photo section under the trip title.

I also added some new profile questions so members could let us know their level of paddling experience. I would appreciate if members would update their profiles. It helps others if you RSVP for a trip to know a least a little about your experience level. New members are already filling this out when they join but some previous members still need to update their profile.

This is a sport with more safety in numbers so in addition to the meetups that are scheduled it can be a good place to find new paddle partners.

I would encourage more people to schedule trips. Some individuals would prefer lake or marsh trips while others want rivers or camping. Please consider leading a trip if there is a pleasant paddle that you are comfortable that you have the skill level to handle. Lake trips are just as sought after as river trips.

I recently changed the settings so anyone can schedule or announce a trip. Announced trips will receive more attention as an email is sent to members. Please list a date though if you plan to announce a trip. In the future we may chose to elect event organizers whom you would contact to do the posting but for now it's open to anyone.

If you want to email another member privately you can do so be clicking on their photo icon to open their profile. Then click on send an email. You can chose whether or not to keep your own email address private. A list of members can also be found under the header Members.

We recently added a link to our Facebook Page. It is on the left side of the meetup homepage. Some people really enjoy the dialogue possible on Facebook. There are now 2 links to facebook. The first link is to the Page - which is mostly informational. The second link is to a facebook group which seems to have a better set-up for informal conversation. For those who do not like facebook, don't worry. Meetup is the main site. Facebook is just an additional area for socializing. No information about members is put on the facebook site except by members themselves.

At this time I am asking all active members to contribute $5 per year towards dues. This is just to cover the cost of maintaining this site and I think is quite reasonable. If there is money left over we'll party with it. If we are short I will pester people. If you are new to the site please free to check us out first though.

The more active this group is, the more paddling opportunities will arise. Trips listed do not have to be in central Illinois, although that is our primary area of interest. If you have an exciting paddle planned elsewhere you think might be of interest let us know. We have paddlers from the Quad Cities, Springfield, and the Chicago suburbs in our club so please don't hesitate to post paddles for locations in those areas also. If you are from one of those locations I'd love it if you did post paddles for areas you know well but might be new to us.

Go paddling!
