20th Annual St. Jude Canoe/Kayak Float on the Mackinaw River

Here is the information on this year's St. Jude float on the Mackinaw.  It's a fun float for a good cause.  It was originally scheduled for June 15 but rescheduled for June 29 because of the threat of thunderstorms.  Last year the water was low but that certainly is not a problem this year :). Now it has been reschedule again for July 20 since the river is too high.

You have to go to the Legion building first, before the float, to sign up.

Below is their posting:

Hosted by the Deer Creek American Legion SAL Squadron 1276. Sign up is from 9am to noon at the Deer Creek Legion on the day of the float. $25 per person donation includes a commemorative shirt and food after the float. Participants are responsible for providing their own canoes, kayaks and paddles, plus flotation devices for each person in accordance with State Law. Primitive camping is available on site. All proceeds go to the St Jude Midwest Affiliate. Tickets are available to WIN an Old Town "Saranac" canoe, complete with paddles & 2 flotation devices.

For more info contact the Legion at [masked]-6776. Here is their facebook link. https://www.facebook.com/DeerCreekLegionPost1276

Below is info from last year which I suspect is the same now but it might be good to double check as it is possible things have changed.

Last year they said that although most people will shuttle themselves they did offer a shuttle if needed. Ask at the Legion Building. When I called this year they said no shuttle.

Canoe rentals, drop off and pickup are available at the area 52 store in Mackinaw phone[masked] and with Larry at 208-1053. (Again this is information from last year)

Last year put in was at Rocky Ford Bridge and takeout was at the DNR Canoe Landing.  It is about a 4 mile trip.  2  hour paddle or 5 hour float depending on how you do it.

I know people were showing up at different times. I was curious on how the water level was too and how it went. Let me know.

You didn't convince me to go, so it must have been fine.

Water level was pretty good I thought. Was a great day to be out. The count I heard was around 260 participants

The meeting place is the Legion at 9:00 as mentioned in previous post and on the map - unless people plan to do the trip privately. Several people already indicated they would be at the Legion at 9:00.

Going to be more like 10 or so for us, no need for anyone to wait unless for us unless they need help with a ride

Since I am unsure of any meeting place, I guess I will skip this one. Hope to meet up with you next time. Peace, Mark

I know it's a short paddle - I think 4 mile. Realistically since no organized shuttle those of you who want to do so could change the length. St Jude's starts at Rocky Ford but if you have someone to shuttle with - you could start at 150 and still take out at the dnr access. Just a thought since again I can't go with work. I was planning before to try and see if people wanted a longer paddle. If you are doing it with st Jude's though don't forget the cost and stopping at the Legion - it is a fundraiser for a good cause.

I am still planning on attending, but have a few comments. According to Paddling Illinois this is about a 3.5 mile float - seems short. I plan on shuttling myself via bicycle to the put in. Is the plan to meet there at 10:30 11ish?

I am still in, going self contained with several others 10:30 11:00 ish. Will be in a green Mad River Explorer.

We are bringing my Jeep and trailer so I might be able to assist others in the shuttle.

Sorry I will miss this one. Going to Osh Kosh for AirVenture.

We will be getting to the legion around 9am, Will have 2 kayaks with but may be able to help shuttle a couple extras if needed. Tan and brown older chevy truck.

I will not be able to attend now, so please don't wait around to do a head count.

If anyone wants to go, but does not have a canoe, I will bring my two person. Just let me know...

Since there will need to be a shuttle I suggest meeting at the Legion building at the time already listed - 9 am - unless someone wants to suggest a different time. You all may want to do a later time. It would probably be helpful for people to specify if they will be there then or just plan to do this trip later on their own. Since the date changed several times - reconfirmation of the trip would be helpful. I would prefer people not wait around waiting for people who just signed up but are going privately or not going. Thanks. Please repost here to help us know who is going and what time.

PS be careful with directions to the american legion building - do it by address - if you just put in name of the legion google maps directs you to the wrong place.

Don't forget - there is no shuttle as far as I am aware - if you guys want to get together does someone want to suggest a time? You guys should shuttle each other - I can't go as I work so no one is set as leader for the trip - that's ok since it's a float and people might not want to hang together but some organization for the shuttle at least and socializing I think would be good. Feel free to post suggestions.

I'm working this weekend (July 20th) so can't go.

Thanks for the info. The Legion needs to be better at getting out info. They aren't even posting the dates on their facebook page and the water levels are nice now. My guess is some of the organizers had other commitments for the 4th of July weekend. I'll change the date again.

Stopped by D.C. Legion today to find that, the float has been postponed once again to 7/20.

I have a floatation device, but no canoe. Anyone need a partner?

    June 30, 2013

  • Karen K

I called the Legion and the date has been changed to July 6 ( I assume because the river is up).

With the recent rains the Mackinaw is running high and fast again. I will check with the American Legion (and check the gage) again later this week. It's possible if the Mackinaw is still too high the float could be cancelled again.

Since they are not helping with the shuttle anyway I was curious if anyone interested in paddling from 150 to the DNR (Instead of Rocky Ford to DNR). That would be about 10 miles instead of 5 and would mean more paddling than just a float. With the current this year any paddling at all could make the 5 mile trip get done awfully quickly. In any case if they are not helping with shuttle we need to probably arrange a time to meet to shuttle each other. I guess the tickets just pay for food and t-shirt and mainly are a donation for St Jude.

    June 24, 2013

    • Karen K

150 to DNR is 8.7 miles - so a 3-4 hour paddle including a lunch stop if we want.

I called the American Legion and here is update. The guy on the phone did not think they were helping with the shuttle this year - he said there is parking along the road by Rocky Ford. The food etc is after the float at the American Legion building maybe around 4 - 6 pm or so. The canoe is part of a separate raffle you have to enter and pay for - you do not have to be present to win.

Address coreection: Please note the correct address is on American Legion road as above. The flyer I saw had the wrong address - if google shows Deer Creek road it's wrong - so be careful - gps could send you wrong. Use 31473 American Legion Road , Deer Creek, IL

Well, looks like I'm out for the summer. On top of my almost-resolved shoulder issue, I now have to get a titanium plate in my neck! Hope everyone has a great time at all the upcoming events, sorry I'll miss them. But maybe in the fall....
