Abe's River Race - (New Date)

The race is re-scheduled to the new date .

The 2014 Lincoln Heritage Water Trail's "Abe's River Race" will provide paddlers the opportunity to explore approximately 9-19 miles of the lower Sangamon River as it flows north from Sangamon County, past Lincoln's New Salem Historic Site, and on to Petersburg, Illinois. The race will start on the morning of Saturday, June 28th with an expected finish between 2-4pm.

Abe's River Race will include 9 racing divisions along with open registration for recreational paddlers:

Canoe Men's (C-1) Canoe Women's (C-1) Canoe Men's Double (C-2) Canoe Women's Double (C-2) Canoe Mixed Couples (C-2) Kayak Men's Single (K-1) Kayak Women's Single (K-1) Kayak Open Double (K-2) Wooden Boat (WB)

Awards will be presented in each division. Additional awards and prizes will be given out at the post-race reception at the Riverbank Lodge in Petersburg.

The Wooden Boat division is an open category for all wooden boats, historical in nature, and of any length. On the morning of the race, participants will drop off their equipment at staging points between 6:00am-7:30am for the Racers, and 8:00am-9:30am for the Recreational paddlers. The racers will start from the Rolling Meadows Brewery farmstead in northern Sangamon County, which will be approximately 19 miles to Petersburg. Racers will need to be at the RiverBank Lodge at 8:00am. Recreational paddlers will start from Gudgel Rd. Bridge in Menard County, which will be approximately 9 miles to Petersburg. I agree. I would have liked to have met those in this group in person too. It was a nice morning!

I would suggest when the events are big and done by others people who are going talk and maybe meet just before the event somewhere - as once it starts probably too hard to find each other.

It was held, and the river was fine. They said the current was about 4 miles per hour, but I'm not sure about that. Weather was great.

Plus, the guy who made this an event (who was also the race organizer) is no longer a member. I texted Scott Hewitt (prez of LHWT) last night and haven't heard back.

I don't know but I agree it sounds iffy. One facebook page for Lincoln Heritage Water Trail doesn't mention the event at all which does not sound good. Their site - thank you Jackie for the link - though says it is. The sites facebook has people posting they are going but no official response and looks neglected. I am working and was not planning on going so did not know there was a problem. I posted on the Lincoln Water Trail your question but it has to be approved by admin so who knows if it will be answered. The lack of advertising on facebook for the event though makes me wonder. Previously they have said no race if above 7 ft on the petersburg gage - it is at 5.26 so that is ok. The lack of advertising on the facebook site worries me the most. Considering how they advertise other thing the lack of posting one way or another is frustrating.

If it is still on, I wish they would put out an announcement confirming it. I checked the Facebook page for the event and didn't see anything there. Rain is also predicted tomorrow but mostly in the afternoon.

Is this race still on? I haven't heard anything from the organizers. The water is as high now as the last time it was canceled.

I will just be getting back from Florida Saturday but hope to come to new Salem or somewhere to meet anyone who is coming so maybe we can set up other times to paddle together. I'm only about 30 min from New Salem. How would I find you guys and what time do you think you might be there?

I was down on the Jack's Fork (Shannon County Missouri) this past weekend and want to keep the momentum going. I'll be there if I can get some new directions. By the way, not sure where that picture came from. That is NOT the boat I'll be paddling.

I have a questioned. I don't have a paddle buddy. So, my problem is always that I can paddle down the river, but how do I get myself and my canoe back up the river to my car when I don't have a second person?

You drop your kayak and gear at the start point the night before or morning of the race. A shuttle will take you to the start from the reception area. Check the link John provided below to get these details: http://www.lincolnher...

Jackie is correct. We organized the race in a way that you will not have anything left at the starting point and your car along with any belongings you didn't take with you will be waiting in Petersburg near the finish line.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
