Meet at midday at Perivale Tube Station (Central Line). The 297 bus stops outside the station on its way from Willesden via Wembley to Ealing Broadway. There is also a free car park north of the station.
This walk will be about 4 miles long and we’ll be guided by Philip Veasey of the West London Humanists. Apart from visiting the wood we will take in the Grand Union Canal, Horsenden Hill and a local pub for lunch, The Ballot Box. Unfortunately the walk is unlikely to be suitable for wheelchairs.
We’ll do our usual voluntary collection of £2 but this time we’ll donate it to The Selborne Society who manage the wood and have allowed us access. The Selborne Society was formed in 1885 and was a pioneering nature conservation group in Britain, pre-dating the RSPB by 4 years. It was formed in memory and honour of Gilbert White, the pioneering naturalist. They took over Perivale Wood in 1909 when it was in rural Middlesex and Perivale had a population of just 34 in 7 houses.
