Book Group "A Man Against a Background of Flames" by Paul Hoggart

Hi Everyone

This month the book is "A Man Against a Background of Flames" by Paul Hoggart.

Just like the previous meetings we will meet at 19h and start talking and debating.

It can be difficult to find each other in the Festival Hall. Here is a map of where we usually meet. Being creatures of habit, we have been meeting behind the shop, underneath the stairs. Area 2 on the map! Map: http://tinyurl.com/7snwmco

Don't forget! You can bring your own drinks and food!

As usual you can find it on Amazon. Don't forget to use the link from the BHA's website.

The link is at the bottom right of the page. By using this link you are helping the BHA.

If you have any questions or get lost on your way please feel free to contact Ben or myself.

A voluntary donation of £2 suggested - but first timers are welcome to give us a free trial. Feel free to turn up if you haven't managed to finish the book but you'll be expected to have read some of it.

Good writing and just about plausible - and what a nice guy Paul Hoggart turned out to be - a bit like a more responsible James Appleby.

I will pop along on Thursday if that's okay. Happy to answer questions and very interested to hear comments. I have no idea why anyone thought that cretinous American RC youtube video had any relevance to the book, unless it is sprayed out as a threat to all doubters and unbelievers. Was Sir Nicholas Harker real? I'm always gratified when people ask that and it would be lovely to think so, but if he was I think we might have heard of him by now. It is a novel, after all ...

    Dear Book Group

I don't know what the normal protocol is, so maybe this isn't appropriate, but if you wanted me to chat about my book a bit, I'd be happy to do so before or after your session. Could be a bit embarrassing, I suppose. I would hate to inhibit frank discussion, but honest, non-malicious criticism is actually useful, especially as I am in the early stages of work on a sequel. Entirely up to you. I won't be at all offended if you prefer to discuss without the author present.

You might also like to check out links below. In the novel two of Sir Nicholas Harker's poems are set to music and performed during a re-enactment of one of his ceremonies. We had them set to music for real and performed by amateur musicians (as per the novel) at the book launches. These videos were shot during rehearsals. If you click 'read more' you get a fuller explanation plus the lyrics.

Interested in knowing how you decide where to jump backwards and forwards in the story. Incidentally, many of our meetings are at Conway Hall which is mentioned in the story. All the best

you are telling me that Sir Nicholas Harker' really existed? or are you confounding me?

This video clip has just been posted on the CLHG Facebook group page. It relates to the book we're reading. I wondered if it was a joke!

This is one of the rare fictions we read in this book group. It is suppose to have a humanistic side to it. Let's read and find out!
